     As you are in Madison, try to find something there to inspire you to further tour this city. It can be a visit to the Chazen Museum of Art where works by masters of painting and sculpture like Sonntag and Rodin are displayed. But culture buffs shouldn't stop at these, but move toward the State Capitol or Taliesi house.

Other attractions include;

- Governor's Mansion, base of the current governor, Jim Doyle

- Olbrich Botanical Gardens, a green area with 16 outdoor gardens and many ponds

- Madison Museum of Contemporary Art has collection of works by artists based in Madison

- State Street, action packed area that extends from the Capitol Building west to the UW campus

- Henry Vilas Zoo, founded a century ago, offers extensive animal collections

     But a day out in the company of bisons, prairie dogs at the Henry Vilas Zoo or a stroll at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens take a back seat to aquatic activities in Madison. The city is located near five lakes and in summer months it transforms into water paradise.

     This modern metropolis of Madison with all its museums, galleries and student-fueled population of 208,054 people, was once swampland. The real change was made by James Duane Doty, a territorial Judge who bought money to shape the city. In the 1840s he named the city Madison after James Madison, the fourth American President. By 1856 Madison had a population of 6,864 people, soon followed by immigrants of German, Irish, Norwegian, Italians, Greeks and Jewish immigrants meaning the city grew quickly. Their numbers are bolstered by a large number of visitors to the city.
