Pretty nice renovated hotel , lot cleaner and welcoming , not high luxury ,but it is the most budget conscious hotel that has a fair downtown view and is pretty peaceful 85% average through my stay

If you are a bit adventurous then this a a great hotel. I was attending a conference at an upscale hotel eight blocks away. I dislike paying lots of cash on a room that I only sleep in so I opted for cheap, convenient, and a good excuse to go out walking in the morning. The Cecil was an excellent choice and fit in well with my quirky attitude towards travel. Yes - the rooms were old, and the bathrooms were shared (but they were immaculately clean), and there were no mints on my pillow - but I slept between clean sheets just the same as I would anywhere. The coffee shop in the lobby was especially friendly - the barista learning early-on my preference for decaf coffee. As far as I could tell, anywhere in downtown L.A. was full of shady people and a sad amount of homeless in the late night, so to me, location would make no difference if you venture out during those hours. And for what I spent on four nights, my fellow conference attendees spent on one and I'll bet that I slept just as well.
Wi-fi in the rooms would have been nice - but it was also cool to surf the free service in the lobby or coffee shop and meet fellow guests.

I loved that it was right in the heart of town, we walked everywhere.
The outlets were hard to find, but considering that this was an old hotel, and I knew that before I booked, I wasn't upset.

I was afraid because of the other comments, but actually I have no bad experience. I wanted the lowest price available, for that it was really ok.The public transport is ok, Metro is not far away, they provide free wifi, rooms are not new and well designed but clean and comfortable to crash after a long touring day.
That part of the city is not seems as it is the safest, but fortunately I had no problem.

Hotel Cecil is well placed in one of the more interesting sections of Los Angeles, if you are looking for an experience of the city as ordinary people live it.
The only general shortcoming I would cite is the lack of air conditioning throughout, though I am sure that helps maintain the very reasonable rates.

Not a standard run-off-the-mill hotel, quirky with quality.
Just one problem: I spent 40 minutes to be connected with my daughter in my room - every attempt at calling either landed me in a phone loop, or gave me an operator who said "just a moment" and dumped me in that same phone loop. He might have connected me just as easily. After 40 minutes and no success, I had to go back to my meeting, and have to give up.

Good price! Very helpful staff and 5 minutes to the metro station.
Did not want to go out after dark, lots of shady charecters hanging around who would always approach me for money or selling their 'services' right outside the hotels door. The hotel was quite aged and could do with a facelift. The double bed was tiny and extremely unconfortable.
