The Lincoln Memorial is a national monument located on the National Mall in Washington D.C. It was built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who played a pivotal role in the abolition of slavery and the preservation of the Union during the Civil War. The memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon and features a 19-foot marble statue of Lincoln seated on a throne, surrounded by 36 columns, each representing a state in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death.
