Cannery Row

Cannery Row is a waterfront landmark located in Monterey, California. Originally a vibrant fishing and canning community, Cannery Row is now a popular tourist destination filled with restaurants, shops, and museums. The history of Cannery Row dates back to the 19th century when it was known as Ocean View Avenue. In 1902, the first cannery was built on the street and for the next five decades, Cannery Row was known as the “Sardine Capital of the World.” During World War II, the demand for canned sardines increased, and Cannery Row's canneries operated around the clock. However, by the 1950s, overfishing and changes in the industry led to the eventual decline of the canning business and by 1973, the last cannery had closed.

Today, Cannery Row has been transformed into a bustling tourist destination. Visitors can explore the many shops selling souvenirs, jewelry, and art. The Cannery Row Antique Mall is a must-visit for antique lovers. There are also numerous restaurants serving up fresh seafood, along with other cuisines, and many offering ocean views. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located at the end of Cannery Row and is one of the main attractions in the area. Visitors can see marine animals such as sea otters, penguins, and sharks. The aquarium also has interactive exhibits that provide education on the ocean and its inhabitants.
