The history of North Charleston is the story of its business. From the early years North Charleston specialized in agriculture after phosphate fertilizer plants replaced large plantations. In addition, strip mining developed between the Ashley River and Broad Path. Since then, the city has moved towards an industrial hub with the E.P. Burton Lumber Company as the first big business in the area. After that, the world's largest asbestos mills arrived to North Charleston. In 1912 a group of Charleston businessmen invested big money into the city's industrial layout. Today several streets in the city are named after the first pioneers like Durant, Buist, Mixon, Hyde, and O'Hear.

The present North Charleston is about business, manufacturing and transportation. Away from making money, North Charleston is a city of high cultural density with the Warren Lasch Conservation Center preserving the world's first submarine CSS Hunley, which sank from an enemy attack in 1864.
