     Durham has blossomed into an industrial city.

     The first commercial breath Durham felt was in the 1860s when Washington Duke thought a century forward and converted the area of modern Durham into tobacco farming.  Originally, he grew tobacco for a small scale trade, but later he saw a future in cigarettes leading to the foundation for the American Tobacco Company.
