The point is that the Czechoslovakians were known as Bohemians and started migrating to Cedar Rapids in 1852 for job opportunities gradually packing local plants. Consequently, the southwest sector of the city earned its contemporary name of Czech Village – a symbol of local "Little Bohemia".

Along with immigrants Cedar Point served as a haunt for dissenters like Josef Sosel, the first Czech lawyer. He was deported from America for revolutionary activities and he settled in Cedar Rapids where he greatly contributed to the development of the Czech community.

Josef Sosel wasn't the only to encourage Cedar Rapids' growth, but Grant Wood, the Iowa artist initiated the design of the Memorial Building and today his influence is witnessed throughout the city. As a practitioner of Midwestern regionalism, his sensational artworks became known world-wide.
