It wasn't the last attack of Corfu as further it became a focus of the Venetian interest, British and French. During the World War I the French took temporary over the area in 1916, but it resulted in bombing and bloody campaigns on the island. Even though the most of the city's architecture was destroyed, it became very popular with tourists and in 1962 a palace built for Elizabeth, empress of Austria was transformed into first casino in Corfu.
