     A former Lord Chancellor of England and founder of this resort, Lord Brougham detained in Cannes while on his trip to Italy in 1834. "I was enjoying the delightful climate of Provence, it’s clear skies and refreshing breezes … orange groves perfumed the air while the forest behind, ending in the Alps, protected resort from the cold winds of the north" were the words he uttered about Cannes.

     Lord Brougham liked it so much that built an Italianate villa to escape there from cold English winters. Forty-five years later Cannes acquired many spacious villas, more than 50 luxury hotels and became a thriving shopping spot.
