Even though the first settlers came to Nanjing 6,000 years ago, the city began to tape shape under the rule of dynasties like Dongwu, Dongji, Song, Qi, Liang and Chen. In 1368, Nanjing became political centre in China and today its authority spread to the political, economical, cultural, and industrial leadership in the province.
The textile, mint, printing, shipbuilding and other industries led to Nanjing as the busiest city with business in the Far East. The city's industrial growth mainly capitalized on its location in the largest economic zones of China, the Yangtze River Delta. Its proximity to the Grand Canal made Nanjing the main transportation hub with area exceeding 6,500 sq km with population approximately 5.5 million people.
As an important transportation hub in East China, Nanjing has more than port, but convenient buses and taxis, airlines, railways, highways and waterways. These make the city easy to experience from great shopping, tasty cuisine to a real fun excitement like bars, clubs, teahouses, and vibrant nightlife of Nanjing.
