  Rooms are well appointed, bars and restaurants are first rate with a wide variety of foods. Prices inside the hotel are high, for all foods and services, for every block you walk from the hotel, prices are reduced.

  Lucy's down the street and the noodle shop right outside the front door were great. They definitely cater to the adoption crowd and we made use of the game room that was as nice as any day care center I'd ever seen. We did treat ourselves to an opulent, expensive and delicious last night's dinner in the main restaurant with BEAUTIFUL night-time views of the Pearl River.

  My last visit was September 1999, and although some parts of the hotel are mid-80's, it's still a luxurious hotel with excellent access to the rest of the city. Rooms are serviced as soon as you leave the room, and the understated inlay furniture and chinese artwork make this a pleasant stay, but be sure to upgrade from their basic room packages. Believe it or not, the locals still use squat toilets in their homes, so its a nice retreat to come back to after a day of chaotic traffic, pollution, and searing city humidity. The locals line up hours for dim sum, but hotel guests go to the front of the line, a nice touch.

• The tall marble lobby with the cascading waterfall that enchanted me in 1992 looks dated today.

• The island is a tranquil, pedestrian-friendly oasis with wonderful colonial architecture in the middle of a surging city.

  Besides the location, the staff at the ammenities at the White Swan make up for the disappointing rooms.

  The breakfast buffet in the lobby was great, though. Also, the pool area looked very nice, though the rain kept us from it.

  The facilities are outdated, especially the rooms. The gym was also more than satisfactory with multiple treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, squash court, etc.

  The building is striking and the greetings of the porters as the taxi drives to the door just a touch overwhelming. That said, the rooms were just a touch small and somewhat stark although immaculately presented. And the river reminds you that the hotel is usefully located in central Guangzhou with easy access for tourism and for business, not least because of the inexpensive taxis. The breakfasts were huge and varied and the Cantonese dinner menu interesting, of good quality and well-priced, as opposed to the 'speciality' Chinese restaurant which seemed over-priced. The staff in the restaurant, as in all parts of the hotel, were uniformly helfpul, well-informed, friendly and I saw no one waiting even in the peak hours.

  Do, please, ask for a room with a river view as this moving picture replaces those missing from the walls.

  When I booked into the hotel I was quite impressed by the reception area - very nice indoor waterfall with lots of koi carp. I booked a king size bedded room, they didn't have any left. The breakfast the next day had a good spread, unfortunately there were a lot of people smoking.

  Firstly, they had virtually no staff on reception so i was waiting for 20 minutes to check in. The room was tiny, as was the bathroom, well below par compared to other hotels in this price bracket - it was also very cold - I couldn't work out how to the control the air con. There was a limited availablilty of English speaking TV channels.

  Being member of leading hotels we thought that it would be excellent. When we arrived the lobby was very nice, the check-in was relatively fast, but then we got to our room, what a dissapointment!

  The room was extremely small, the furniture was old, it felt like we were in a Hotel in the 70? The bathroom was tiny and it generally looked old. For the price I paid, I could have stayed at a new hotel with newer facilities.

  We thought the service was very good, including pick up at the airport and our drop off at the train station for our trip to HK. The gals who did this led us straight to the waiting room. Fortunately, our train left from the East train station but the hotel made sure that it's guest went to the right place. The only thing that could have been better was our room which was quite small for a party of three with a small child. A bed was wheeled into the room which already had two single beds so there was not much space to move around.
