• Staff was very friendly. However, we took a short drive to Volcano Village for dinner at Thai Thai Restaurant which was great.

  Our room in the main building was clean, and we never saw a bug.

  Oh, and the crater view from the bar is pretty cool, so just stop and have a beer there before you check into a more reasonable hotel in the village.

  For $125 we got a 10x10 foot (if that) room with black mildewed grout in the tiny shower stall. The bathroom didn't vent well so wallpaper(! Cramped outdated rooms - not worth the $125!

  Volcano House does not care and is simply milking their fantastic location. Why can't you clean the silver and plates (there was food on multiple utensils and plates).

  How can you allow sheets on a bed that you can see through because they are so thin? I likley would have had a better bed and food in prison.

  A good place to get breakfast and head out early to sites like Thurston Lava tube ahead of the tour buses. To be nice, it is rustic and the place has seen better days - the rooms could use fresh wall coverings, and the furnishings are simple. Overall, you pay for the location and if you can compromise on that, for less money you can find something in the Village.

  On our second night, the fire alarm went off and sure enough, Madame Pele's fireplace in the lobby was smoking like, well, a chimney. The food is basic, and the restaurant (Ko'ohelo) is a bit overpriced and after dark you lose the view anyway - we did better going to Volcano Village for pizza at Kiawe Kitchen - pricey, but gourmet pizza in a relaxed, island-trendy setting.

  Bathroom windows open onto the hallway (nice smells walking to/from your room).

  Health hazard warnings were posted regarding the unsafe water (bring bottled! Pubic hair on the toilet and wall of the bathroom, and pubic hair and blood on the threadbare sheets of the bed. We tried two different rooms and found them both equally horrible.

  The room was old, small and cold (the damp weather didn't help), but it was clean enough.

  The beds - we had two double beds - could use updating.

  They also have a great view out the back, 2 gift shops, etc. The price to stay there may be high for such a basic, rustic place but it goes with the scenery & location.

  Contrary to others, our crater-view room was nicely furnished, clean and comfortable. We were entirely satisfied with both the staff and the room. Its a popular stop for the tour buses (BUSY in the daytime, but wonderfully quiet in the morning and evening). Rooms are basic, no TV and no AC, bathroom is small. Walls are thin, windows are louvered glass, so sound isolation isn't very good.

  This is not the National Park Service but a concession operation.

  Girl at the front desk with the long hair was pretty amusing though - we liked her.

  My husband asked me while we were in the bathroom, "should I shave today," and the woman next door answered "no you don't need to. The food is marginal and way overpriced as well.
