Kyiv is notorious for its hotels being way overpriced but even by those standards, the Ukraina lags.
The location is near perfect and, quite frankly, this is no small asset, Kiev being a much more attractive city than pictures can tell.
You can`t get a better location, as central as possible.
One great thing about the Ukraina is its perfect location overlooking Independence plaza where the Orange Revolution took place.
When the taxi dropped us off in front I had to carry my suitcase with no help up the stairs to the lobby.
The hotel is five minutes walk from the Metro on the blue and red lines, and for 50 kopecks ( about 6p UK at the time of writing, you can get anywhere on the system.
Our room was a junior suite with a separate very small bedroom.
Even though there were two of us booked in, the room only had enough bedding (some of which was stained) for one person, and having to go and ask for toilet paper - which should be replenished daily upon room servicing - was ridiculous.
There was a refrigerator in the room and a hair dryer in the bathroom.
We also had to make our own bed the first night: the floor attendant gave us our sheets.
The price seems fair by Kiev standards, and we paid about £80 UK for a nights bed and breakfast.
The dining room is elderly and infirm and the breakfast was entirely missable, even though it contained a chocolate bar!
Breakfast was in the restaurant, and you were forced on to communal tables.
Breakfast also included canned juice, candy bar, bread and once a cream puff, and tea or coffee.
The following days we had pre-payed breakfasts, and it was a fairytale each day, to watch the staff bring out the food on trolleys, like in a hospital.
Given the possibility of eating there in the evening, I did not, and walked to the Stradivarius Italian/Ukranian restaurant five minutes away, and for a bit more money, fared better was was treated very nicely.
Much better Staff Service at the Dnipro Hotel.
Reception staff seemed helpful to us, and the money exchange was efficient and a very reasonable rate.
There was negligible choice of unattractive and unpleasant food in ungenerous portion size, which was reluctantly served by staff who were used to soviet style service.
The front desk staff were not friendly but not rude; they spoke minimal English.
Security seems ok, with guards near the lift.
The lobby was one huge smoke filled hall.
At night, prostitutes hang around in the lobby looking bored.
The room was clean and very similar to a hotel room in the U.
The room itself was large and clean, with a great view, notably at night.
The bathroom was clean but cheap and horrible - what you would expect a decade ago or in a small provincial city, perhaps, but not in one of the biggest hotels in the capital.
The toilet was not clean with a dirty plastic seat on it.
The room was ok for size and had a great view over the square, it was reasobaly up to date and fairly clean.
