After considering the usual chain options, I chose this hotel for its historic value, boutique quality, and the claims of past visitors that the beds were comfortable.
You can't beat the Washington Inn for a downtown Oakland location (next to the Marriott) and a fair price.
The location of the Washington Inn is great - right in Old Oakland, reminds me of classic hotels in Europe- I like and the staff is friendly.
Wifi is spotty, depending on the location of your room.
I specifically asked for the reservation for Thursday evening, November 29th, as I would be flying out of Oakland airport the next morning.
I had the NY steak also very good with a wonderfull Cab.
For $90-110 per night you get a nice room, a little on the small side, a comfortable bed, a decent sized bathroom.
Staff were very nice, the suite w/ king bed was perfect for us and the continental breakfast was sad- cheap lukewarm coffee.
Their queen rooms are actually full-size beds, so if you have more than one person you should definitely get a king room.
In a lot of rooms you step down from the door/bathroom area to the main part of the room.
I almost forgot to mention the comfortable bed and pillows, and the great soft towels!
There are several fantastic restaurants within a block of the hotel, including Le Cheval (Vietnamese) & B Restaurant & Grill, as well as Indian, Thai & Chinese.
I didn't eat in the restaurant so I can't comment on it.
The continenetal breakfast consistsof toast or sweet bread.
We felt safe in the area, and I believe that in the next few years, the area will only improve with even more restaurants and, hopefully, more stores!
They offer a complimentary, full american breakfast with all of the trimmings.

The Washington Inn is conveniently located to Jack London Square, the hotel is clean and the staff is so nice.
The hotel has the cutest elevator I have ever seen - old, painted, interesting shape, not very fast!
There is an old metal cage elevator that is small - but quaint.
The parking is the pits; you can either pay $15 to park in the garage or use the meters across the street, which have a two-hour liimit.
The staff was friendly and accommodating, the room was very clean.
The rooms, while small, are all recently renovated and quite clean.
The rooms are clean, the food is excellent.
