  The hotel is set someway outside Udaipur and has excellent views of the surrounding hills. Inside, there was plenty of space with a separate ante-room for hanging cloths and leaving bags. The bathroom was clean, but bath lovers will be disappointed. Indeed the gym and spa were still under construction when we were there, although this in no way caused any inconvenience. The staff could do with some training - when we were relaxing by the pool, no one came and asked us if we'd like a drink. Overall I would recommend the Royal Retreat as a place to stay, but I hope that the hotel management reads the above comments and takes them on board by training its staff to better standards. Beautiful location, but staff could do with some training.

  The senior staff is of-course very warm, genuine & helpful. But yes, i would give 5 out 5 to the location of Royal Retreat. Beautiful location but unprofessional staff.

  But our main concern was the unprofessional front desk guys & unfriendly kitchen staff. Also we had a tough time eating tasteless food sometimes.

  Located at the base of the hills, totally secluded and quiet, this was an antique lover's dream. Everything from the towel racks to the bed frames were beautiful. The pool was lovely, the grounds were immaculately kept and the staff were fantastic. Or, at least request a room in the main lodge, or even better there's a secluded villa near the original pool which is quite far from the construction.

  They are greatly expanding the Royal Retreat and adding a second pool which will be the biggest in Udaipur.

  On a gamble, I decided to reserve a room at the Royal Retreat, which appeared to be the only semi-upscale lodging option that was both reasonably priced and within 10-15 minutes of central Udaipur. Owned by an Indian husband-wife team of art dealers, the interior public spaces and guest rooms are lavishly, yet tastefully, decorated with examples of classic and folk Indian art, including tapestries, paintings, and free-standing sculpture. I stayed in two different guest rooms during my visit, both of which were spacious and well appointed with marble and granite flooring, artwork, and modern bathrooms, while affording excellent views of the Retreat grounds and surrounding countryside. The Retreat is not as convenient as some travelers might like since it does require a car or other motorized transport to reach the main parts of Udaipur. The Retreat is also adjacent to a small village whose friendly residents (many of whom are employed by the Retreat) and lack of aggressive tourism lend to its authentic rural flavor. In summary, the Royal Retreat is a reasonably priced and gracious alternative to the more popular, and pricier, accommodations of central Udaipur. And its rural location lends it charms that cannot be duplicated in the bedlam of Indian urban life.

  The hotel personnel, particularly the kitchen wait staff, were exceedingly polite to the point of obsequiousness, which I found somewhat stifling.
