  2) The room we got was next to the staircase AND it had just 1 small window. Be sure to check out the room before you hand over the credit card (yes you can ask to switch rooms but they cannot always accommodate you). 3) In the bathroom we got the shower could not maintain a constant temperature. When I checked in, the front desk person offered me a far lower rate, until he realized I had already prepaid through GTA Hotels.

  Be aware that there is no elevator, so you'll have to hoof it up those stairs, but the bellhops will gladly carry your luggage up for you.

• This is a lovely hotel; great location, beautifully decorated to the period of the building, gracious staff, etc.

• The hotel is in a great location. The hotel was very clean and decorated in an antique fashion.

  The Monterey Hotel is in a great location, near Fisherman's Wharf and in the middle of some shopping streets. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

  Our room was on the first floor and was quite small, which meant unpacking was difficult.

  The location is great, not in the bustle of town, but only minutes away.

  We frequently stay at Embassy Suites, but we found the Monterey hotel a step above the others. We were upgraded to an ocean view room without even asking.

  Also, the rooms towards the front of the hotel get ALL of the street noise from the locals having a good ol' time until the wee hours of the morning. I wish their staff was at every hotel in the world as they were just fabulous!

  If your room is in the back of the hotel, you will sleep soundly. Don't plan on much closet space or moving around room. Some of these rooms are smaller than any room I ever stayed in overseas.

  The hotel is in a great location and the staff were fabulous: very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The room was small, but not the smallest of stayed in for that price. I didn't have the experience of the green water like some travellers.

  The windows were terrible though, because they didn't block the street noise and it's a main street with a bar next door. Well, there is an elevator, it's just broken. The mattress was lumpy and the room was musty.

  THe furniture was beautiful, but the room was not comfortable. Overall, the room and hotel were not very comfortable and offered no real amenities to make the stay enjoyable.

  The room rate was still relatively high but still less than some of the major resorts. I was not prepared for the very small rooms which were poorly designed. The TV volume did not work and they were unable to fix the problem or switch TV's.

  The hotel staff were simply wonderful Every one we dealt with was friendly and very helpful. The hotel is an old one and there is no elevator but the staff were always ready to help with luggage. Some rooms were a bit noisy and some were small but the rooms were comfortable, Mostly it was the staff who were just outstanding at this hotel.
