  The copywriting and photography for the hotel website are excellent, and I was entranced by the thought of staying at this hotel. If views, sunlight and room orientation are important to you when you are staying at a hotel, it would be advisable to ask what you will see when you look out of the window. The view from my room was certainly not what I was expecting. Sarah Harvey’s restaurant – Harveys – next door, to the hotel is excellent. Sarah and her staff understand genuine exceptional service and style, and I look forward to the day Sarah opens a hotel.

  In need of a break, I was very much looking forward to a rest – including a few spa treatments and generally loafing around. After this, I did not stay around the hotel much and also chose not use the spa services.

  We were luckily upgraded to a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom room. The staff were friendly and knowledgable.

  It is just lacking a pool and it can get very hot in Melbourne.

  The suites were clean with modern decor and plenty of space, although there were a few minor issues with the airconditioning and TV remote controls not functioning properly, and wardrobe space was at a bit of a premium for anyone on an extended break. The staff were friendly and attentive, and any room service requests were adressed promptly. Breakfast was the only meal we ate in the hotel and their menu offered a nice variety from standard hotel fare. The location at South Yarra is excellent with plenty of dining options available within easy walking distance.

  The idea of a two bedroom apartment really appealed to me, but these apartments are on the small side, so there really wasn't a lot of privacy. We had booked a room with a "rooftop balcony" and that amounted to a small balcony totally consumed by a table and two chairs - not at all what I had pictured. It seemed fairly empty for at least part of our stay, and it felt a little too quiet to me. But the staff was very gracious, I must say. We used the restaurant next door for breakfast, which was excellent, but expensive. It is fairly convenient to downtown Melbourne, with the South Yarra rail station just down Toorak Road a few blocks - takes only about ten minutes to Melbourne CBD.

  There is free use of internet on a computer in the hotel's "business centre", and that was very much appreciated.

  THe staff werent very helpful in arranging taxis or storing luggage, and I just didnt get a very welcome feeling. The room was good but nothing spectacular. Given the price i was paying for a two-bedroom suite i would have been better staying at the Westin or Park Hyatt (which i have before and enjoyed). The breakfast at the Lyall was great though1.

  A two-bedroom suite with everything a business traveler would need (free Wi-fi was the best). And, the patio area outside the room was a nice change from the recirculated airplane air. The staff was very helpful and attentive, even securing dinner reservations for my colleague and I to try some kangaroo steaks at a place around the corner. South Yara is a unique neighborhood, and the location is great to get the tram into downtown Melbourne. The staff even provided umbrellas when a fall rain shower kicked up on my last afternoon in town.

  We stayed here with a total of 10 family members during the Australian Open and all agreed that the service was exceptional. From dinner reservations to wine tours to retrieving a watch that was left at a golf course across town--they always found a way to accommodate our requests. The rooms are very comfortable and the location has a great neighborhood feel.

  My wife and three small children found the two bedroom suite very comfortable. The kids had their own bathroom with a TV suspended from the ceiling. The hotel staff was friendly and available. When my wife left all her jewelry un-secured in the room, we called the hotel and the staff put it in the safe for us. The spa was great and the kitchen in the room very handy. The bar area was very elegant and they have nice outdoor seating. I have The Lyall's number programmed into my cell phone.

  Not only is the location perfect - steps from one of the best shopping and dining areas in the city - but I immediately felt at home and warmly welcomed as soon as I arrived. The suites are spacious with an incredible attention to detail. The spa service I received was one of the best I have ever had, the dining is great and so is the wine list.

• Tolles kleines Hotel

  Wir übernachteten neulich bei einem Kurzaufenthalt in Melbourne im Lyall. Es ist perfekt geeignet dafür: Spitzenlage und eine lockere, freundliche Atmosphäre. Besonders die Mitarbeiter waren toll. Ich fühlte mich nur ein einziges Mal unwohl, als der Inhaber des Hotels einen Angestellten laut und auf herablassende Weise vor uns rügte, weil besagter Angestellter die kleinen Eiseimer vergessen hatte, die zu unseren Piccolo-Sektflaschen gehörten. Ich verstehe natürlich, dass gewisse Standards aufrechterhalten werden müssen, selbst wenn die Piccolos viel zu klein sind, um warm zu werden, bevor man sie austrinkt. Aber die Rüge hätte nicht vor den Gästen stattfinden müssen. Das Personal war toll und äußerst hilfsbereit. Wir hatten ein Apartment mit zwei Schlafzimmern, was für vier Leute etwas klein war. Aber wir hatten nicht geplant, viel Zeit auf dem Zimmer zu verbringen, es war also in Ordnung. Ein toller Aufenthalt. Wir werden hier noch mehr Kurzurlaube verbringen.
