Only in Italy can you have a luxury vacation in a refurbished 16th century monastery. There’s a swimming pool on the 7th floor of the hotel and the sleeping rooms at one time were monks’ quarters. The décor echoes the low key elegance of the architecture. If you are looking for a luxuriant, relaxing, and unique experience, this is a great place. Breakfast is included with the room rate.

Overview

Seemingly carved into a mountain side, a 16th century monastery once home to the monks of Barbanti (due to their flowing beards) is now home to San Francesco Al Monte Hotel.

Hotel San Francesco offers serene views over the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.

Its rooms are equipped with Jacuzzi and offer a spectacular view of Naples and the Gulf.

A careful renovation of the old monk's cells has preserved their enchantment, architectural structure and several period details. The decor is characterized by measured elegance: delicate colors, lamps and classic furnishings.

The seventh floor, where the hotel touches the green hill of San Martino, contains the swimming pool and the garden: it is an oasis of well-being and peace with a breath-taking view.

The terrace features a hanging garden of rare beauty: the ancient gardens cultivated by the friars have been preserved with their walkways and bowers. A swimming pool was installed in the most scenic spot, carved out of the rock, almost camouflaged by the rocks and greenery. A second pool, with hot water and hammam, awaits guests in a hidden grotto.

Getting there

Well located in walking distance between Centrale and Montesanto cable cars, hotel is linked both to Piazza Plebiscito area and historical center in only three minutes journey. Well linked also to the shopping districts of Vomero and Via dei Mille. The airport of Capodichino is about 10km away, approximately 20 minutes by taxi. Upon request, shuttles to and from the hotel are also available.

By car: From the North, take highway A2; from Salerno, Taranto and Foggia - highway A16; from Reggio Calabria - highway A3. The highway leads to the tollway 'Tangenziale.' Exit at Arenella and continue towards Piazza Mazzini and Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

By train: The train station of Mergellina is about 4km away. The train station Piazza Garibaldi around 7km. The Central 'Funicolare' station 'Corso Vittorio Emanuele' is approx. 300m. The Montesanto 'Funicolare' Station 'Corso Vittorio Emanuele' is approx. 400m from the hotel.

Well a view , the bay , Vesuvius and the city below, very quiet at night, unlike Naples in the daytime. Excellent service and every comfort, including spa showers in the ensuite and free minibar. Good food.

Beautiful view from our balcony over the city and the bay towards Vesuvius, the hotel staff were friendly and hospitable, the rooms and bathrooms were pretty nice. Breakfast was first class and the terrace restaurant was excellent for evening meal.
