This 15th-century peaceful monastery has great views of Mount Etna and the bay of Taormina. The rooms have gorgeous decorations and the public rooms are outstanding. The staff is dressed immaculately and they are very helpful.

The San Domenico Palace Hotel, Taormina, the most famous 14th century monastery-hotel in the world owns its natural terrace among gardens in perpetual bloom overlooking the sea and is located within lots of interesting historical and modern sites within walking distance including the Greco-Roman theatre, Piazza IX Aprile, Giardini Naxos bay, Mountain Etna, the medieval clock tower, Corvaja Palace, St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Roman Odeon, the Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano, Porta di Mezzo and Porta Catania, the oldest two in the city.

The hotel comes with 105 elegant guest rooms featuring breathtaking views over the gardens and down to the sea, night views of Etna, and some have private terraces.

Getting there

There are major directions to get to the hotel.

From Catania, Fontana Rossa airport CTA take motorway A18 to Messina towards exit at Taormina, then proceed to Taormina/Castelmola (not Taormina Mare), and at the roundabout (following Lumbi Parking) enter the tunnel and at the exit proceed towards the Hotel Excelsior, proceed into Via Domenico Di Leo, where you will reach your destination.

From Palermo take motorway A19 to Catania (190km) and once approaching Catania, take the A18 to Messina towards exit at Taormina.

From Messina (A18) take motorway A18 to Catania towards exit at Taormina.

Since this is a limited traffic zone, it is possible that there are road checks/blocks by the police or wardens. Advise the warden that you are a guest at the San Domenico.

Getting around

The service and cuisine were definitely the best in the area, the atmosphere was one of calm, friendly elegance, the staff, especially the concierge , were beyond helpful. Our room, had a private terrace for drinks and sun bathing on the loungers, breakfast was great as was the occasional lunch we ate.
