I've stayed in 4-star hotels and I've also had to stay at Motel 6's when money was tight, but I would have to say that in my opinion the rooms at the Marriott Riverwalk were just not 4-star quality.
I was satisfied with the hotel because I got a good deal with Booked.net paying $80.
The location really can't be beat - very close to the Riverwalk, the Alamo, good eats, and shopping at Macy's and Dillard's.
Best thing about the hotel is location location location , very easy access to riverwalk and to the mall across the street.
We really enjoyed the location of this hotel, right on the RIVERWALK but away from all the congestion and noise.
We did not have a car, arrived by taxi from the airport.
The water taxi is a short walk from the back of the hotel.
They keep trying to update with new carpets, furniture, etc, but the bathrooms are small, tile cracked, tub marred, the water system not reliable, and the rooms have very low ceilings (especially the bathroom).
The room I was given was small but very clean and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever experienced in a hotel.
We booked a KING bed room, but they only had 2 doubles available so they gave us a better "view " room to make up for it.
Our room had a view of the riverwalk and the king size bed was so comfortable.
There are no 4 star luxuries in the room, like robes or a full complimentary bath products ie we had no creams or shower caps, just soap, shampoo and conditioner.
I did not eat at the restaurant hotel, as there must be 100 restaurants within a stone's throw.
Oh, one last mention, the restaurant and Lounge are both excellent.
The breakfast is wonderful and they even have a buffet table just for the little ones.
The Riverwalk itself was beautiful and I loved the restaurants.
The restaurant in the hotel was, of course, pricey and not good.
However, the staff – front desk, room service, valets – were all top notch.
Be forewarned the concierge service is only available Sunday evening - Friday evening.
The Concierge made our visit; he reserved a table at the fabulous revolving Chart House Restaurant for us last minute and was able to get us a window table for 4 on a Saturday night at 7PM!
This was one of the best hotels that I have stayed in, their service, cleanliness, and commitment to their guest happiness was unreal.
From the lobby, one only offers access to the ballroom and gym/pool floors.
I spent some time at the pool and the sundeck, and I worked out at the hotel gym.
On the second morning, the housekeeper changed out our bathmat for a nice rug and added a spa robe to our closet.
The rooms were very clean and classy, and housekeepers were excellent.
The staff of the Marriott were so friendly, the hotel so nice and clean, and comfortable beds, that it made our weekend really special.
The room was clean, but once you put a suitcase down, put a laptop and some other things on the desk, the room instantly becomes cluttered.
Room was clean and housekeeping was very diligent about meeting our needs.
Rooms were "ok" - comfortable and clean, but worn.

Everyone at the front desk was very nice. They even gave us a bigger room at no extra charge. Great TV, drawers for your stuff, plenty of closet space. Just good service and a great location - right at the Riverwalk, restaurants, shopping, the Alamo, etc.
There is only one set of elevators, but we did not find them slow.
