• I have stayed at this hotel on many occasions and have to say the service, staff, food are all very good. Rooms are cleaned daily, fresh towels, bedding etc, very impressed. If you want a nice place to stay, good food and service, the Rodina is the place.

  Be wary of the taxi drivers in Sofia, make sure their meters are on during your journey, or you will be charged heavily as your foreign.

  The food has always been good with good service has well, but it's not worth the trouble. The rooms are old and have not updated and yes they are smokie and not to clean.

  From cold room in the winter and hot rooms in the summer. TV was not worth having, nothing English but MTV and CNN. I have been in the higher price rooms and the cheapest rooms but they are all the same. The staff at the front desk was no help and just stuck up.

  We went there and had an outstanding meal (go left out the hotel, cross traffic light at major intersection and look for 2 story purple building. I believe they are the security people in black suites. They were friendly to us when approached with questions.

  The hotel is a bit dated and the rooms on the small side but was clean and the staff, for the most part, were friendly and helpful.

  We booked the hotel ourselves looking for something reasonably cheap near the centre of Sofia, although it's still a good 5 to 10 min taxi ride to the centre. Breakfast was a step back in time in this large soviet/70s decorated room.

  I had a tiny "luxury" room on the 9th floor with Internet access (which worked great! The room was so small I couldn't open the minibar because the door hit the bed! TV screen was about 12" with a busted remote and only carried a handful of free to air satellite channels.

  We walked left to the intersection and found a great little coffee place with croissants for breakfast. The lobby bar was good for espresso before going out at night. A gazillion taxi drivers line up on the left side of the hotel to take you anywhere. My room was in the upper levels and had a fantastic view. The lobby had a nice doorman, and appeared to have several wealthy Eastern European couples checking in.

  I stayed in my own room, but traveled with friends and they had the same opinion. The tub w/ shower seemed to be convex and you couldn't really stand flat.

  We were quite satisfied with our room on the sixteenth floor which had a spectacular view over the city. There was also a mini-fridge, TV and the bathroom was spacious. Furthermore there was an abundant supply of shampoos, soaps, dental and shaving kits, plus a hairdryer. Obviously this room was not designed for guests to have breakfast in.

  The only disappointing thing about the hotel was the breakfast room on the first floor. The waiters did not remove the used tablecloths. The room had no windows and very poor lighting.

  It appeared to have a dodgy nightclub upstairs with pictures of 'pole-dancing' girls in the lift.

  Another reviewer said you wouldn't get anything like it at a comparable price in the US - but what we paid for a week would get you half a day in a US hotel. However, it was snowing out, and pretty cold, so in between sightseeing and eating dinner we did want a comfortable place to come back to. The room was fine, big enough, warm enough, comfortable bed, everything worked, bathroom stuff changed each day, beds made, not a bad view of Mount Vitosha in the distance. There was a TV that worked, but we're not big TV watchers even at home. The breakfast was fine, too - lots of it if you wanted. Funny enough, there WAS a smell of smoke when we checked into the room. We didn't use the gym, but we saw plenty of other people doing so, as it's open to the general public, I think.

  The little we saw of Bulgarian TV looked bad - worse than in the UK, even.

• The pool was large and clean but very very cold. The room service food was pretty good and very affordable. The location was pretty good, and within walking distance to some fun spots.
