  When we registered with the reception desk they assured us that this was unnecessary an that if would like to grab a coffee and come back at 10:30am they would have something for us. When we returned at 10:30am we were informed that they ha just given away the room they had intended for us to someone who had arrived on a later flight but guaranteed us that there would be a room at 12:00 for us. When we returned at 12:00 exactly the same thing had happened again and again we were guaranteed a room at 1:00pm. We we returned at 2:30pm we were told there were still no rooms ready for us and to come back at 4:00pm. By this time we had reached the end of our tether and demanded to see the manager.

  The bed was also comfortable and had fresh,good quality linen. Our bathroom was really large,very clean and in great condition. The breakfast although nice was very expensive paying $44 for two. When checking in we had to wait 2 hours as they were doing up our room, it didn't bother us but it would have been nice to go straight to our room after such a long flight.

  Watch out for the Cockatoos, they will fly into your room and steal stuff if you don't keep ther doors shut. The island is lovely, we walked most of the time and got the free shuttle bus, golf buggies were available to hire aswell, it is good that you don't require money to purchase anything on the island, you can charge to your room.

  Just make sure you book a room on the top floors eg: Floor 8 upwards because they have been renovated, we had a room on the seventh floor and it was old and a bit musty. One tip for eating out on the island in the evening, make sure to book, on one occasion we could'nt get food anywhere and ended up getting room service which was awful, food was luke warm and not up to 4* standard, still the resturant was extremely busy.

  Good buffet breakfast (if you want to pay $30 per head). Great views from the room (you must DEMAND to stay at the 5th floor or above). Front Street (where the shops and restaurants are) is a great spot.

  There is also a free shuttle which is quite regular if you don't want to walk. It seems all they did was make the bed (with the same sheets) and change the towells. Beds were messy as it seemed they just threw the dooner on and did'nt even straighten them.

  Very much liked the Hotel, tennis courts and gym facilities, proximity to Catseye Beach and hiking. But liked fish and chips place and bottle shop.

  Restaurants including Romanos on Island were below average with poor service.

  We had a renovated room (which is a must to request) on the 19th floor. The room was huge, very clean, and well appointed. The beds were comfortable as was the lounge furniture. The porters were great and helped us with our luggage and pointed us in the direction of the lounge.

  We ate at numerous restaurants on the island and found the food to be aweful and the prices VERY high ($22 AUD for a terrible pizza about 8 inches in size at Manta Ray Bar and $.

  The room was renovated which is an important thing to ask when making your reservation. From the moment we arrived, everyone was very pleasant and ready to offer any service required. Living in Sydney, I was used to not getting great service so having so many happy faces on the island was refreshing. The great thing about this island is that there are many choices for food and drink. All our experiences were good and were surprised at the food quality. The Beach House was the most expensive but the food quality and presentation was wonderful. The location and settings were also a delight.

  The hotel restaurant always got too busy and too loud, besides the smokey room from the hot items section.

  We stayed in a Coral View room at the Reef View, and it was very nice. We also found the staff to be helpful and courteous. With regard to restaurants, we had good experiences at the restaurants: a very nice barramundi dinner at the Mariner Restaurant; another nice dinner at Romano's restaurant; and excellent pizza at the Manta Ray cafe. My only cautions concern the tours: trips to the Great Barrier Reef frequently encounter choppy water, so watch out if you tend to get seasick! Based on information we read before the trip, I didn't expect jellyfish at Whitehaven.

  We stayed in this hotel Feb 2005, after being supposedly 'upgraded' from the Palm Terrace Bungalows. One redeeming feature is that the ocean front rooms have nice views.

  The hotel itself looks awful, it was designed without any thought for the surrounding environment and the decor has not been updated since its inception, which must have been around the 60s or 70s based on the colour scheme.

  Rooms are very large - but the use of space is extremely inefficient. Caution: Tap water tastes like it is straight out of swimming pool (not hotel's fault! Large bathroom, with separate shower and tub.

  The concept of having 2 queensize beds next to each other is questionable. Room was well maintained, with an effective air conditioner, however the unit required a bit of time to figure out how to operate. Porters deliver bags from airport to your room, but you need to wait about an hour before your bags turn up.
