  Mazatlan - The people are very nice and friendly in town, I felt very safe even when we were out and about town late at night. Ironically, the concierge at the sister hotel PB, Mazatlan is outstanding. One fabulous experience we had was a five course dinner on the beach, under a lit canopy with outstanding service from the Pueblo Bonito staff at Emerald Bay.

  I highly recommend Pedro & Lola's for dinner, drinks on the roof of the Freeman Hotel to watch the sunset and a full body massage at Aroma Spa (only $15 for the hour). We used the shuttle service and taxis to get back and forth to town, but if you want to be in the main area, this is not the best hotel for you. The rooms are quite spacious, but I don't think I would classify the resort as a 5 on the cleanliness scale, perhaps a 3.

  Finally, I became irate and told them I wanted to go to my room immediately! We were told to sit in the lobby and wait for the bellman. Finally the bellman came in and spoke with the time share women, who called us cheap gringos(yes ,my wife speaks fluent spanish) and took us to our room. If you happen to have a room above you you will be subjected to hearing everything from the toilet flushing to the farting and belching of the tourists above. The pool is beautiful and the pool food is good, if you can get someone to take your order. For the money we paid I did not appreciate having to walk around the pool to find a poolboy to take my order.

  Upon our arrival we were told there were no additional beds for our kids, and they only had a room with double beds or a king size, but nowhere for us to accomodate our children, who are less than 10 years old.

  Not only is it not inexpensive, but moreover, things that are standard in most hotels worldwide, such as water in your room, or coffee in the mini suite, were charged, and at outrageous rates! We had to use the mattresses that were outside our terrace to lay them on the floor of our bedroom. We actually had to ask the maid to keep the bedspread and decorative pillows off our bed because the smell was that offfensive! We took the kids to the miniclub, and not only were we charged a $50 dollar fee for both of them for five hours, but on top of that we were charged for every arts and crafts item they made, and for the water they consumed.

  The service was wonderful, the staff is great. The rooms are large, clean, and the view is gorgeous. We had a great time at the swim up bar, they really took care of us in every way.

  We spent lots of hours there due to the high heat and humidity being unbearable.

  I was very surprised when I found they had given my wife and me a suite (#1816) without a King Size bed, located adjacent to the Gymnasium, on the ground floor! The swimming pools were nice, but the water temperature was way too high for us to enjoy it. The waves were consistent and pretty good for body surfing, so we all had a nice time in spite of the pool problem.

  Additionally, the room was very musty and smelled like wet plaster. My kids' suite #1813 was also musty, but not near as bad as ours. The next morning It sounded like there was an aerobics class taking place in our living room! I called the front desk to complain, but the sound continued for another 40 minutes, until I finally investigated the source and found that my suite was adjacent to the gymnasium! Although, the front desk promised me a suite change by 1230, the suite was not ready until 430 that afternoon! The suite they gave us (#1923) was very nice, except another call had to be made about missing hot water in one bathroom. Most aggravating was the fact that both of our suites had virtually no sound isolation.

  There are no vendors at the resort and everyone was really friendly and helpful. 00 (American $$$) that can be put to your room at the end of your stay. We had a representative give us great tips on local hang outs and places to eat in the city. We did take the free shuttle to the Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan so we could jet ski, parasail and check out the city, but we were not impressed with that hotel at all. The activities were alt of fun and it is kid friendly too.

  Even though the property is new and the pools are beautiful, the food service at the facility leaves much to be desired. We noticed many of the families at this facility utilizing the free shuttle service to the Emerald Bay for pool activities, and then returning for food at the Mazatlan facility or nearby restaurants.

  The heavy use of a disinfectant in the lobby is irritating and leaves a poor first impression. That continues with a visit to the main restaurant where both the steak and seafood entree were terrible! The wait staff compounded the bad situation with indifference and a disappearing act!

  It is a large resort and it is not difficult to find a quiet, private place in either the pools or gardens. The staff are very helpful and the restaurants are good. The two downsides to staying here are that it takes about 13 minutes to get into town (the shuttle runs from the Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay to the other Pueblo Bonito on the hour and returns on the half hour). The other is that, at least when we were there, the pool area and outdoor bars were overrun with bees. The grounds, rooms and facilities are well maintained.

  When I called, the supervisor informed me that the housekeeping staff was almost finished for the day and our room would not be cleaned because the sign had been left out too long! The attention to detail is not so much there anymore: Dirt and stains are building up on the once-perfect marble floors; lampshades are sometimes crooked, dented, and discolored; upholstered furniture is fading; and the plumbing and HVAC noises have become louder and more prevalent. Aside from the problems, PBEB is still a lovely place with some real stars among the staff.

  The second-worst aspect of PBEB has to be the service, particularly in the dining venues. Ask for a glass of water and it comes with no ice. Then the bill shows a charge of 80 pesos per glass of water!

  Very nice pool but too warm at times of high heat, excellent service, fun activities at the pool. Rooms are very well decorated and maintained. Hotel is a good distance from the main city, but there is always a shuttle to take you there if need be. Panchos in the golder Zone has excellent shrimp, views of beach, service.
