  Breakfast very good. Gym and sauna, poll excellent.

  Prices of food and drinks very high, thus atet elsewhere except for breakfast (included in price).

  This was our second trip to Vietnam and on both occassions we have stayed at the Palm Garden Beach Resort and enjoyed the time very much. The latest stay was for 8 days over which time we swam at the beach and pool, sunbaked, ate freshly caught seafood, the odd drink and shopped for clothes and shoes in Hoi An. This does not present any problem as taxis are very cheap,anyway the resort runs a bus shuttle service to and from town 4 times a day. The sea water was very clean and clear blue whilst we we there (28. The resort has a water sports centre and beach towels are supplied to your chair. The resort has a very large swimming pool which again is well maintained with plenty of chairs and shade available.

  We stayed 4 nights at Palm Garden Resort in April 2008 and we absolutely loved it. Each day we caught the afternoon free resort shuttle bus into the old town for shopping, markets, visits to tailors, etc. We then stayed on for dinner after dusk and caught a taxi back to the resort (about $3). We really enjoyed our escape back to the quiet beach resort each night. We spent the mornings swimming at the beautiful clean sandy beach, lazing around under the coconut palms or by the huge pool.

  The Palm Garden is a wonderful 5 star resort on Cua Dai Beach, near Hoi An. The staff speaks great english, is very accomodating, and very helpful. The breakfast (included in all packages) is delicious. The location is excellent, and there is a free shuttle to and from ancient Hoi An town. There is also a Qi Spa there, probably the best known Vietnam Spa chain. There is free internet access at the business center. There are also tennis courts, pool tables, ping pong, and everything else you could possibly need.

  The hotel is well maintained, staff is friendly and helpful, and the rooms all we could wish for (we did not opt for a bungalow, so had no issues with open air bathrooms). The large, beautiful pool allows for a feeling of privacy even with other swimmers - it is solar heated, so will of course be too cold for some in the winter, and too hot for some in the mid-summer. Hoi An is close: we tended to take the complimentary hotel shuttle one way and take a 50,000 VND ($3) taxi the other way when we went to town if the shuttle return times weren't convenient for us (the shuttle runs four times a day). We visited some of the local competitors (Riverside Resort, Hoi An Beach Resort and the Victoria) and thought our hotel was the best of the lot: quiet, and spacious enough that even though fully booked it didn't feel crowded. You can book local trips to My Son, Hue, and for snorkeling at Cham Islands through the concierge at the hotel: the service is at the high end, both in quality and price. We appreciated that the hotel doesn't feel the need to offer Happy Hours or animated get-together activities - for us returning to this oasis of peace and quiet after eventful days out was just the right thing.

  Of course, by 10 am, some of the offerings are getting a little tired, but it isn't hard to still have a very decent breakfast anyway.

  The location on the beach was great, but the shower was plugged and there were lots of bugs.

  The weather was lukewarm and so was the staff. Don't waste your hard earned money at this hotel.

• However the beach is lovely and clean for being in the area and we did like the staff who tried their best with the condition given them. Anyway, across the street lies a little tailor shop, Than Tam, owned by a absolutely lovely women (Tam) and her family.

  One of the rooms had a broken rockingchair on the balcony and about everything felt like lack of maintenance.

• Hoi An is a quaint town with good shopping and restaurants - try TamTam, Cargo Club & Thanh Phuong (cross the bridge over the river - not the japanese bridge, turn left for 50m TP has red chinese lanterns outside - very cheap & very good vietnamese food & australian wines). Palm Garden has an attractive pool area, well tended grounds, clean private beach, a good varied buffet breakfast, a shuttle bus into Hoi An ( failing this taxis only $3-4 ), and a few local shops & fish restaurants within walking distance. There was absolutely no atmosphere in either of the restaurants or cocktail bar and apart from breakfast ( when the place was awash with large groups) rarely had any customers.

  Generally staff looked miserable and the service erratic.

  The rooms were very spacious but they were dirty and I didn't feel happy with it. The toilets were uncomfortable and generally I never felt happy about anything in the bathroom. The breakfast was good and it had sushi (although not the best I've had and I wasn't keen on trying the prawn ones as they didn't seem too fresh).

  Along the ceiling and high walls were coated in cob webs and the like and made me feel sick as it was above the bed. For a 5 star hotel you would expect to have a bath tub, but there was on a stand up shower (not even a cubicle) with something they'd call shower curtains. The swimming pool is very big and is a bonus for the hotel, but is VERY cold. Although there was a free shuttle service to town, I thought the times were not very accommadating.

  We had origionally booked a room at the Golden Sands - but given the very mixed reviews on it we changed to the Palm Gardens. We stayed in a Delux Beach View room, which was very nice. The room was quite big, with a huge king size bed which was very comfortable. The aircon was great as it kept the room lovely and cool, when it got too cold, we just turned the temp up!

  The breakfast is probably the worst thing about the hotel - especially when it was served outside.
