Montrose Hotel

The hotel seems to derive most of its business from its location next to the university.

Overall an excellent experience but it is not suitable for someone wishing a city centre location unless you are prepared to take the bus in and out.

If you must stay for the location, eat somewhere else.

The 46a bus stopped right outside if coming from Dublin or the Air coach from the Airport (only 7euros ) also stopped outside and runs 24hrs.

It's about 2-3 miles outside the centre and will cost you around 10 Euro to get there in a taxi (although buses are cheap and frequent).

Our first room was small but the second was much larger; rooms were clean and beds comfortable.

Fifteen minutes later they have us a room with one double bed.

Overall the rooms were basic, the bathroom was small and clean for one nights stay (with a very badly placed out toilet).

The bathroom grout was cracked and missing, and the bathroom itself was so small I couldn't get into the tub without crawling over the toilet.

She said the hotel had been overbooked and there were no doubles available, I suggested they put the 2 single beds together and make it up as a double bed but this suggestion was rejected because "there is no one on duty to do that".

There are no bars or restaurants nearby so you have a choice of the hotel restaurant, which is expensive, the hotel bar, which only sold 'staff canteen' style sandwiches and soup, and a pub that we didn't visit.

The lobby, restaurant and bar look quite nice but the rooms are in need of updating.

The breakfast served in the hotel restaurant was boderline edible.

Also, we enjoyed the bar area and had lunch there two days.

The food was excellent, a good selection of food for breakfast.

That evening when my partner and I decided to go for a walk we were looked up and down by a manager with a very grim dissaproving look overall with the exception of a receptionist and waiter the staff were appallinginly unfriendly and unhelpful.

Free car parking which is a bonus in a city location.

While we were there there were lots of visiting sports teams in the lobby and quite a few business people.

Wicklow is known as The garden of Ireland and does its best to not dissapoint.

Also, there is internet available: both wireless connections and a computer station to use.

OK the room was clean and tidy; the hotel room was for just one night so it was basically average.

The room was the absolute surprise after few opinions of the hotel: an alone standing room in a "corner" of the floor, with more than 25 qm and very clean.

On the plus side the rooms were a reasonable size and were otherwise clean, there is plenty of parking, and the staff were friendly.
