Poor location, far from the beach, little to no amenities, poor English skills for the tourist.

Incidentally, I met their cousins in a separate room on the outward leg of my trip; I woke to find one crossing my bed.

The rooms were OK too, a bit worn looking but clean with comfortable beds and we all had a very good nights sleep.

I'd stay here again if I needed a bed for just one night in Phuket and everywhere else was booked up (which was why we ended up here in the first place).

I tried the gym and have to agree that a few badly maintained machines in a room without air conditioning and windows is hardy conducive to the regular exercise you need on along trip away from home.

They shut off water two days ago and I went all day without a flushing toilet, no warning was given.

The dining room on level 2 is a bit dingy, as is the karaoke bar/lounge where we spent a few hours the previous night (the drinks were pretty cheap though for a hotel in the main town).

Breakfast was the usual buffet fare you seem to get everywhere in Asia with a mixture of local and Western dishes.

Breakfast is a scrum, first find a table and then fight the large, noisy Chinese tour parties for some food and hope that you still have a table when you get back; you might be lucky.

The staff is friendly and helpful, although speaking very basic Thai helps.

We also discovered that there is a 'lounge' with Thai young women that's not included in the facilities listing near the lobby restrooms - my husband was aggressively approached while taking our children to use the restrooms!

The pool is quite small but good for someone who's after a quick dip and a sunbathe (if you'd just arrived after a long plane journey for example).

This hotel got a good review from the lonely planet which is why myself and Himself booked in, and also for the gym which has not been used since 1970's with 5 broken machines.

The Matropole hotel was nice and clean, the rooms were also fairly large.

The rooms are outwardly very clean but they have COCKROACHES.
