  My wife and I stayed at Le Meridien Port Vila for three nights in what we believed was going to be a fantastic room. The rooms and facilities sounded great and looked fantastic in the pictures we saw over the internet. The room was small and the beds were, well small to say the least for a classic king room, but anyway. We had problems with moisture in the room and the tiled floor often became a death trap as the tiles became slippery. The staff are very friendly and the facilities of the resort / hotel are fantastic however the disappointment of our room put a bit of a dampener on our Port Vila experience.

  Unfortunately on our arrivial the room was a little disappointing. The air conditioner made a shocking noise and we could not keep it on all that long with out it driving us batty so we ended up utilising the services of the ceiling fan for the duration of our stay.

  Having travelled a fair bit, our expectations were not for a 5*+ in a place like Vanuatu, but we were pleasantly suprised by the resort's facilities in terms of rooms, meals, and recreation. VERY friendly staff, not gushing or fawning, but plenty of smiles and talk - one must remember to switch onto 'Island Time', things get done eventualy but always with a smile. First impressions are important, we noted Le Lagoon had a very impressive drive up to Reception, however once at the front dor of the Meridien, this was counteracted by the welcome at Reception. 5min by taxi 'Chills' is a good eating spot. Hired a taxi for 5 hours $V12,000 good value taken to local knowledge spots off usual tourist routes.

  The location was good hidden away it felt like i was on a island on its own, short distance drive to the main shops and cafes.

  I also collected a number of addresses from the staff to send things to. We stayed in a deluxe lagoon view room (deluxe means 2 double beds). It was a lovely room and would be perfect for your whole stay but because this was alone time without the kids we decided to indulge in the overwater bungalow. Noala & Delphine(waitress), Anton & Nixon (bar staff), Helen & Selena (guest relations) and the lovely locals who came to the resort to sell some of their crafts and jewellery.

  I fell in love with the staff and cried on poor Delphine when it was time for us to leave for the airport.

  This was our first visit to Vanuatu and we were very happy with the hotel and the rooms.

  Interconnecting rooms were great. This was great as it allowed parents to have some quiet time and the kids were kept entertained. Lots of great dining options.

  So i contacted our travel agent and they inturn contacted the Accommodation manager who told us that he could move us the next night. When we were moved we were so delighted and pleased at our room it faced the pool and lagoon and it was airy and no smell. The staff are a bit shy and quiet but friendly.

  We stayed at Le Meridien in Jan 08 and I must say I was very very disappointed on our room when we first arrived - We had to book 2 rooms as we had 2 adults and 2 kids and we were suppose to have connecting rooms, I also checked this through the travel agent who assured me we were booked in connecting rooms, when we got in the rooms this was not so and the rooms smelt awful (very dark and damp bit mouldy, facing bush)in saying this I think we were in the section which has not been upgraded as of yet. I contacted the duty manager who said sorry this is what you paid for and we are all full.

• Plenty of great places in town to eat,"chill" was the best. The staff were mostly friendly and although it was frustrating at times you do have to remember that things are done differently in Vanuatu.

  The second room was a bit better but still very old and tired.

• The resort itself was lovely and our over the water bungalow was great, although you have to walk a distance, then about 100 metres over a suspension bridge to get to the main area for meals etc. Some great restaurants to go to, and Eton beach is absolutely beautiful and even though it is a distance to get there, it is worth it.

  Since our first visit there has been considerable improvements made to the resort especially in terms of the grounds (the huts down near the pool are a fantastic idea and work well in all kinds of weather) and the rooms which have been tastefully renovated in the past year. My young children have really enjoyed the spacious grounds on offer at this resort and when they weren't swimming, playing tennis, basketball or soccer down near the pool they were up in the kids club with the very friendly child minders which is great for my partner and I because at this resort we actually get a real break! The hotel manager and his partner are exceedingly welcoming and go out of their way to ensure that each time we have a stress free, child friendly holiday.
