  The room was dark, but I think that's good or I would have seen how dirty the carpets were! I was still walking on glass shards after the room was cleaned the next day.

  1 staff and a long queue in the lobby reception, and again only one incompetent, slow, and surly staff at the 19th floor executive check-in. Bed was typical Chinese firm mattress, pillows were unconfortably firm. Bathrooms were poorly layed out, shower was very small, and the water pressure varied from none to jet-stream, with interesting temperature variations as well. No drinking water was provided for free, only expensive small bottles of evian in the minibar. I accidently dropped a glass on my first day and it broke on the tile floor of the bathroom. I had to argue with the hotel manager to get the gym open at 6am for a morning workout, it normally opens only at 7. The staff were mostly useless, with bad attitudes and careless service.

• Rooms were nice, large and most important, very clean. The food was really nice and there are several nice places to go out and have a nice diner or lunch.

  The reception and front desk services were very good yet when I arrived at 11pm, there was no doorman to speak of to assist with luggage or even help finding a taxi to leave the hotel (? One day the maid service never arrived -- seems that the do not disturb light was on -- I never touched this switch so it was probably on when I checked in -- nonetheless, no phone call nor note indicating that housekeeping attempted to provide service and that I should request service should I wish. Instead, I arrived back to an unkempt room and laundry still sitting awaiting collection. Because I needed that laundry done asap, had to pay a 50% surcharge to use the "express service" -- not too thrilled about that. Comfortable bed but for the price it should have been. I felt that the toiletries were uninspiring (comparing with other hotel rooms in this price range), bathroom was odd (probably an old floor plan), living room area was uninviting. They did not even provide the complimentary two small bottles of water that just about any room in town provides; not thrilled about that one. Hotel lobby bar is terrific; the staff were nice and very friendly.

  Right now, not the best if you wish to go to Tianfu square or other more interesting parts of the city - cab is a necessity. Notwithstanding, this location will become more significant to businessmen upon the completion of significant construction in the area (office buildings) and completion of the metro (a few years away) which will take you to those other places.

  But realistically, the service has indeed improved greatly over the past two years, and I would overlook the pre-2007 reviews on "service. The Friday evening buffet, and the Sunday brunch are simply fabulous!

  This is a beautiful hotel with lovely and comfortable rooms. The spa had very expensive massages - and the pool was like a hott tub. The gym was in sauna-like temperatures and the staff offer you warm water as you work out.

  Kempinski is a great facility; the lobby is grand, the rooms are luxurious. Finally, someone asked for credit card and we got our rooms (but one of us had to wait for the cleaning to complete). The sliding door to the toilet compartment was fixed open with a sign "Please don't use this door".

  But the staff seems to have an indifferent attitude and lack of maintenance is making the signs of wear to show. When checking in, the staff at reception barely greeted us. There was a lot of hassle, but no one seemed to take care of our check-in, people came and went and you did not know who belongs to staff and who not, and who is taking care of your check-in or if anyone is doing anything.

  We stayed in one of their deluxe suites, and we really liked the suite. You get a nice city view from the windows. The only problem is that the temperature control panel in our suite didn't seem to work and a few technicians looked at it and couldn't fix it. The housekeeping was mediocre: one day they cleaned the dishes away from our dining table but didn't even bother to wipe the table surface so that we saw all the food crumbs left intact when we came back.

  Most ridiculously, they trie dto charge us for using their swimming pool, which should be free for guests. Anyway, I'm not sure I'd go back to this hotel again until I hear that they improve their service.
