• As mentioned, the Hotel Palacio has an excellent location.

  However, we were very disappointed by a noisy hotel construction project right across from our room. We were also disappointed not to have hot water for the shower.

  It's a very cute boutique hotel with very friendly staff. Then we switched to a room at the Palacio, for half the price of the Sofitel, it's really a no brainer.

• The standard was lovely but having had a not too pleasant a night before, we decided to spend the extra $40 on the suite and get the extra space, terrace and spacious bathroom. All were beautifully decorated, the staff were friendly and helpful and the public areas were excellent, with the loveliest patio. The location is fantastic - just off Conde with lots of restaurants nearby and all the sights in the Zona Colonial. The only negatives were very loud aircon or generator noises during the night from outside the room and that breakfast is $9 extra. On the latter, there were plenty of cheap places nearby to get breakfast, Cafe Flor on Conde being where we chose and enjoyed.

  The free wireless and proximity to Conde Street were alone worth the price. I must say that my room had a slight mosquito problem but I figure this is common in what I have now learned is a very humid area. The staff was friendly and did not hassle about bringing guests to your room (definite selling point if you are a single traveler!

  The hotel was very professional over email and responded quickly (within a few hours normally) prior to arrival. Hotel Palacio has a great location just off El Conde, in the edge of the old colonial district. Close to the action, but very quiet and safe, even at night. Turning on the AC unit in the room fixed this to some extent, but the unit itself was kind of noisy when trying to sleep. The room was not large -- I banged my shin (three times in one night! The door to the room was located in a kind of strange place: directly facing the bed, maybe 6 feet away, had a very large glass pane in the upper half (which was covered by a curtain, but still), and opened directly into a courtyard, which was great except it made me feel a exposed at night. Good location, but rooms a little exposed.

• La suite no fue tan especial

  Estuve aquí por primer vez en el 2004 y verdaderamente nos impresionó – un hermoso edificio colonial con personal simpático, muy limpio y una linda habitación con acceso inalámbrico al Internet. Esta vez que fuimos parecía estar más descuidado – necesitaba una mano de pintura, la vara de la cortina estaba quebrada – ese tipo de cosas. Pagamos alrededor de $100 USD por una habitación amplia con una cama king, bar y un baño grande. Los techos eran de al menos 4.5mts de alto. Lo malo era el olor tan fuerte a moho que parecía salir de nuestra habitación. Es una ciudad húmeda, así que ha de ser difícil mantener la humedad fuera, pero por el precio que pagamos, creo que deberían de esforzarse un poco más. Probablemente no me aloje aquí la próxima vez que venga a Santo Domingo.

  Stayed here for the first time in 2004 and it really impressed us - beautiful colonial building with friendly staff, very clean, and neat room with wireless internet. We paid about $100USD for a spacious room with a king sized bed, a wet bar and large bathroom.

  Drawback was a very intense musty odor that seemed to be coming from our room.

  Despite what the hotel staff states, do not count on paying for your room with traveler's checks. Apparently the $2 phone call was much more important than the comfort of his guests. We only stayed in this dreadful place 1 night of a 7 night trip and everywhere else we stayed we encountered very amenable staff who tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

  We attempted to do this and the staff refused to take the American Express traveler's checks signed right in front of them. After making other arrangements to pay for our room and attempting to put this bad experience behind us, the next morning trying to check out went just as badly. Instead of apologizing for the problem the night before, the German manager tried to charge us for the call his staff suggested we make on the hotel's phone. What I found even more disturbing than this manager's very rude treatment of us, was the manner he treats his own employees. We were told that if there is any problem with cashing traveler's checks he takes the price of the room out of the salary of his front desk staff.

  I had the what is called the "superior" level room which was large, spotlessly clean, very quiet and very comfortable. I spent time working in the room which was very comfortable. I left small tips in the room and unexpectedly the maid delivered fresh flowers. Hotel was excellent value and good location in the zona colonial. The only thing I missed was a fitness center available at the much larger conference type hotels e. Excellent value hotel, extremely clean, very comfy, quiet, nicely located.
