Hotel New Cataract Aswan

The location of the hotel is close to the city centre and taxis and carriages are available outside.

As it turned out, we couldn't have been happier with the New Cataract hotel location and views and much preferred it to the Movenpick and Island Isis we saw as we travelled the river.

The scenery and location of the hotel is nice.

The rooms are quite large but are tired although clean with a large and comfortable bed and reasonable bathroom.

The rooms had been recently refurbished, the bathrooms and room were very clean, very comfortable.

The rooms were spatious and clean and the bathrooms were fine, plus you are allowed to use the Old Cateract's lovely swimming pool and other facilities.

Parts of the quite spacious bedroom were shabby, especially a grey plastic bath, too short to lie down in.

The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms dated but alright.

We only ate breakfast there which was very average, but there was enough food and it was of good quality.

The room size and cleanliness were fine, but service was generaly slow and the prospect of using cash to pay a restaurant bill was greeted with horror and the food offer was very limited.

We ate in the old Catarct in the 1902 restaurant.

The first night I found a 'foreign body' in my food and my husband was given the wrong meal - we were not charged for the meals.

Meals in the main dining room were buffet style and rather uninspiring, but the coffee shop meals were cooked as we waited and very good value.

The staff was terrific when we were there, perhaps new management.

I needed a doctor for a friend and called the front desk, once they realized it was not an emergency, a doctor knocked on the door in less than 15 minutes and was treated better than any situation I have seen in the U.

The staff was very helpful, the meals were not exceptional but tasty.

The swimming pool is very nice as it the terrace around the pool.

The New Cataract belies it's name as it has a faded charm dating from the '70s I suspect including a lift that hasn't worked in a while.

The next day we were trapped in the lift - the alarm button was not working, neither was the emergency phone and it was quite some time before anybody responded to our yells and thumps.

The hotel is old and does need a bit of a facelift, but the rooms were large and clean.
