  I've always enjoyed the high level of professionalism, the location, and the comfortable, spacious rooms. Plus, I can't say if it's related to the new color scheme but the rooms are not as quiet as before. The staff is still very nice, the afternoon wine is a pleasant touch, and the bakery a block away is still wonderful.

  We stayed in two of the double double queen rooms. The rooms were adjoining rooms on the sixth floor. These rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated rooms, with a separate sitting area and a very large bedroom area. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom quite spacious. Also, the Aveda products and robes were a nice touch.

  The foyer and public lounge area of the hotel are attractive but perhaps a little on the small side - there didn't appear to be a lot of places where one could just hang out. Our room (819) was attractively furnished and clean, however there was little room to move around due to the amount of hotel "stuff" in the room (furniture, pillows, minibar food, Minky the stuffed bear, etc, etc). On the plus side the bathroom was larger than expected and came with numerous toiletries (Aveda products). We took a quick look at the fitness center on the 9th floor and it appeared to be perfectly well stocked with the usual equipment (although there are no windows in that room). We found the service from all the hotel employees to be very high and the hotel generally has a nice feel to it.

  I would have given it 5 stars but the room size coupled with there being too much useless stuff in the room left us feeling that it wasn't quite a top notch hotel.

  Booked our stay here through the Portland visitor's website and the 'Big Deal'- discounted rate, free parking and cont b-fast included. This used to be an all-suites hotel from what I could tell, nicely restored with lots of bold colors. Our room had a nice bathroom, small living room with couch, tv, desk, bar and curtained pocket doors into the bedroom. Friendly staff and complimentary wine/beer in chic lobby daily was nice touch. Fun to see so many guests with pets -but our room didn't reflect same. Right down block from street car line and near all downtown city 'action' but just enough away to be quiet.

  After requesting a room away from the construction, we got a room right above the construction. Did I mention being tired and wanting some peace and quiet after a long day? The young staff in their 20's was nice all around. The corner room we were given was a good size and had great light from the enornous windows (that, the bed, and the 36" flat screen were the best parts of the room - only if it weren't for the construction). And the toilet was hilarious - it had the same suction force as those on planes.

  But, it's not the staff's fault as much of downtown Portland is under construction. Hey, at least these guys admitted there was some construction going on around the hotel (the people at the Paramount were in complete denial - "Oh, there's not much construction going on around the hotel, they're just building a parking garage out there"(! When I expressed my concern about the construction noise, the managers graciously addressed the issue w/ aplomb. All together, the room looked like some old people were thinking of revamping it and stopped half way because 1) they got tired or 2) changed their mind.

  The King Suite was clean, bright, and comfortable. Alll staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. However, the concierge was not available on two of our six days at the hotel. The location is primo--walking distance to many sights, restaurants and the wonderful transit system. Altogether a fine hotel and a great value.

  The room was large and had lots of windows, which provided wonderful light but no views (except for the vacant buildings nearby). The one and a half baths in the suite had not been touched and the large soaking tub in the full bath was particularly funky. The room was clean and serviced promptly while we were out.

  We spent the Memorial Day weekend in Portland and stayed at the Monaco in a Grand Suite. But it was great to have six, albeit skimpy, bath towels, especially since when we called the proscibed number for turn-down we discovered the office was closed for the weekend. Probably our biggest complaint was the bed.

  First of all, book through the hotel Web site if you want member credit for your stay; and always check out the "Hot Dates, Great Rates" section to see if there are less expensive rooms available during the time of your stay. This will not be automatically included if you just use the regular reservations function! I stayed here a couple of times previously when this was Fifth Avenue Suites. I got a double-double suite for my friend and myself, and it was much like the rooms I'd stayed in previously. The only issue with these rooms is lack of ventilation in the bathrooms and the wallpaper is peeling back because of humidity. The staff are super, attentive and very friendly.

  One thing I did tell them in their post-survey is that the carpeting near the elevators is absolutely dizzying, a terrible pattern that seems to move when you look at it.

• We travel with our dog quite often and I have to say that the pet friendly atmosphere here was simply amazing! 3) pet friendly atmosphere and 4) awesome customer service. A charge was attributed to our room incorrectly when we were billed and when I followed they took it off immediately and sent me a personalized email inviting me back to stay again. Also, the concierge rocked and picked us a fabulous restaurant.

  Upon arrival there was a huge amount of hair in the beds. The bathroom was COVERED in black mold and the floor was covered in a large amount of hair. The 2nd day housekeeping had to come back 3 times to clean the room.

  Hotel was so dirty and was NOT remodeled as advertised and the staff comped us FREE for 2 nights. The horrible smell in the room could kill a person.
