This hotel is definitely for the sophisticated traveler--someone who likes the experience of a Relais and Chateau or Four Seasons, but doesn't necessarily want to pay those prices.
We have received a full refund, needless to say we have paid the price with the stress and anxiety caused by the ruthless and dishonest practices of this hotel.
But if you are a couple going for a few days and want a hotel with luxury accomodations but not a luxury price, this is the place for you.
The HVR is no different This hotel may be clean and the artwork is beautiful but for the money don't waste your time.
Knew the location--someone new might find a little out of the way or hard to locate and the beach itself is beautiful.
The upside is obvious (if you play golf) but even if you don t, you benefit from the quiet serenity of the location.
I would definitely select a different room type/location though.
We arrived at the Cancun airport with no shuttle waiting so we ended up paying $62 USD to take a taxi to the hotel.
The walk downtown is about 15 minutes but taxis are always available.
We wanted one queen or king bed, but that is available in the studio or in two and three bedroom suites, or in the penthouse (three bedrooms, two levels, outdoor jacuzzi).
Rooms: We got the studio room (which is the only room that has a king bed, unless you get a suite) because of the cheaper price.
Rooms: We were upgraded from a studio to a one-bedroom suite at no charge and the room was fabulous.
I was kept up by people in the next room -- the studios are not actually separate, they are bedrooms which are closed off from the suites.
It is on the 3rd floor with a great view, and comfortable beds (better than the bed in the room) instead of lounge chairs.
We ate all of meals and relaxed right outside our rooms without ever having to walk into the main restaurant or bar for anything.
They have some of the best restaurants ranging from cheap taco bar - $3 for 3 fried shrimp tacos - heavenly, and expensive - $50 seafood meal for 2 with lobster tail, fish, shrimp, crab or conch that is beyond delicious.
Restaurant/Bar: We booked an all-inclusive package with  Travel Engine and it proved to be excellent value.
1 of the restaurants (Jasmin) is INCREDIBLY expensive ($11 for an omelette, $8 for a fruit plate) - it was nothing to spend $35 USD for breakfast.
Pool bar had an excellent breakfast and waiters were friendly and helpful.
As for the staff, the maid service and cleanliness of the rooms were simply perfection.
The waiters and reception staff were more than accommodating and friendly.
2) The hotel is in a quiet, therefore the service is great and the gardening staff refused to turn on the hot tub for me.
The hotel also sits next to a spa which includes a gym, hot tubs, and pool among other things.
It was a good price for all inclusive 220 USD/night - a mexican environment - Maya architecture and good food, fitness equipment, jacuzzi but small pool.
So the fact that the pool only has a pool, fitness center, two restaurants and spa would not impact us.
9) The hotel has free wi-fi if you want to bring your laptop.
Bathroom nice and large, i'm very particular about clean sheets.
The maids did a great job keeping the rooms clean.
