      The room was equal or better, the location was more convenient, the meals were better quality and lower priced, and the room rate was lower, as well.

      The location is excellent with transport available closeby.

      Great location, with many sights within walking distance.

      The breakfast was pretty ordinary so I wouldn't recommend the breakfast here but the location is great and the staff are friendly.

      A great place for exploring on the city on foot.

      The bed was a queen and comfortable, the desk was nice, and the TV offered several english channels.

      The beds are clean and the toilets and showers work - why go to China and expect European standards?

      The bathroom was tired and smelled moldy and very small - the toilet is behind the door.

      The rooms are a bit worn but clean and have panorama windows.

      There is a large walk in shower but the drain in both the shower and the bathroom took for ever to drain any water away and the seal at the foot of the shower did not work so when you had a shower the bathroom flooded.

      The breakfast were not as good as at the other hotels we stayed in and the restaurant was a bit crowded.

      It is a full service hotel with salon, tour desk, gift shop and restaurant.

      The Chinese buffet breakfast included in our price left a bit to be desired, no juices, no black tea or coffee and not that much to choose from.

      The hotel serves a really nice buffet breakfast - the best I had in all of China.

      Sites, shopping, restaurants, the river - they're all right there.

      The hotel lobby is beautiful and the staff very helpful and polite.

      Staff very helpful and spoke reasonably good English.

      Despite this, the desk staff were very friendly and as helpful as they could be depending on their grasp of English.

      They actually smiled a lot which we have found to be quite rare among Chinese hotel staff.

      The safe was closed when we arrived so we phoned housekeeping who came and said they would send someone to fix it - we are still waiting!

      After travelling from Taiwan to Shenzhen to Guilin, we were brought to the lovely lobby of the Universal Hotel.

      Room slightly worn but clean and quite large.

      The first time we were given a renovated room which was fantastic, very spacious, clean and modern.

      The room and the fifth floor in general was really run down although clean.

      The room was very big,clean and comfortable if a bit on the dark side.

        After travelling from Taiwan to Shenzhen to Guilin, we were brought to the lovely lobby of the Universal Hotel.

        It looks modern and stylish and because Guilin is becoming a big tourist destination for westerners, we expected the rooms to be of a similar level. As we walked to the room, we notice the peeling old wallpaper and the stained carpets. Inside, the rooms were not any better - old, stained carpeting, careless repairs. The bathroom was tired and smelled moldy and very small - the toilet is behind the door. The furniture was looked nice but now looks old and worn. There is no bottled water provided (not sure if this is the norm in this area) but plenty of items were offered for sale at the price of "uncomplimentary at 10rmb" including the "high quality antisepsis and healthy pants common size" with the free condom enclosed. The entry to the room uses a funky key lock - you rub the chip imbedded in the card over the sensor and it takes some doing to get it in the correct position.

        We walked in off the street to get a double room for 3 nights and thought it really good value. The beds are clean and the toilets and showers work - why go to China and expect European standards?

        Universal Hotel has a great location. The breakfast buffet is not so good, but acceptable, specially , considering the low priced room rate.
