This is the most well-known hotel in Shanghai, with its distinct rooftop penthouse shaped like a pyramid that was the former residence of Sir Victor Sassoon. This hotel was closed for extensive renovations and was scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2009. The owners promised to keep it the same way as it was, with the one-of-a-kind features that made it famous. The national suites overlooked the Bund and were styled after different countries. It was known for coasting on its reputation in the past and offering services and facilities that weren't worth the money paid. There was a jazz band playing in the bar, and the south wing of the hotel will be transformed into an art center.
