Directed to the block by the man at the desk was very polite and helpful, the location made a good base for touring the island, the hotel was just lovely.

The hotel's location is very good, with regular buses and the hotel staff are helpful.

When we arrived at the airport it turned out we did not have TRANSFER documents and they were only expecting 3 not 5 to transport to the hotel.

Taxis aren't too expensive, and most of the drivers speak good English.

The room had a very comfy bed, loads of storage, lovely large bathroom and a bonus of a hob and large fridge with freezer compartment.

It's a lovely welcoming hotel and yes the rooms are old fashioned but more than adequate and kept impeccably clean by the room staff daily, with changes of fresh linen and towels.

Bad points: The room: Aside from the balcony view the rooms have no air conditioning and felt very hot unless you opened the door onto the balcony.

Didn't eat dinner in the restaurant as we don't do hotel buffets but it was cheap - 15 euro for dinner and drink - we ate either in Funchal or in one of the half dozen restaurants/cafes opposite the hotel.

Dom Pedro's breakfast buffet was excellent - a good choice of food and smoking and non-smoking areas in the restaurant.

The limitation with the hotel is the fact that the nearest village is 2 km away although there are a selection of shops (including supermarket, gift shops, car hire, restaurants, cafes, take away, dry cleaners and pet shop!

The indoor pool and area, plus reception area & restaurant at breakfast (especially the terrace outside), and the gardens were all fantastic and the staff were lovely.

On the other side of the road are shops, restaurants, bars and cafes which are all very good and quiet also locals eat / drink there so you don’t feel like your paying tourist prices.

Some of the staff were unfriendly- at one point my husband went up to the desk to request a replacement corkscrew for the faulty one in our room and the receptionist wasn't too obliging.

The service and the staff is the most friendly and professional, that i ever seen.

Whereas everywhere else on the island the people were polite, my room had a fantastic view overlooking the sea and on arrival at the hotel we went to reception was clean tidy.
