Having seen that facility and the rooms, I can say that the Barcelo hotel is on a totally different level than the Royal Tulum even though it is at a similar price point.
If you get a deal around that price, we recommand this hotel to you.
It's a 4 star hotel (don't pay more than 900 US dollars/person or 1000 Canadian dollars/person - taxes included for a 7 nights vacation!
Given the Royal Tulum's nearby location it seemed like the perfect choice.
My family of 5 recently enjoyed a great trip to the Riviera Maya, and feel the CRT can be a good value if you are looking for a smaller AI resort with an amazing beach and good location.
This resort is in a great location, about an hour south of Cancun, with easy access to Playa del Carmen (free hotel shuttle), Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, Coba, and Tulum, eco parks and lots of great snorkeling opportunities.
Traveling to town was $2 on local bus (we went and it was safe) or $16 by taxi (we took one and no bartering).
Though when travelling back to the airport they make you go ridiculously early, our flight was at 10am and we had to be on the bus at 4:35am.
The room was pretty standard with 2 double beds that were quite hard and the bathroom did not have a tub but our kids managed in the spacious shower just fine.
Accommodations-were great, the room furniture was modest, which included 2 queen sized beds or one king, a large cabinet with safety deposit box, mini-bar that is refilled daily, and a TV with 39 channels, 50% English.
They even came into our room a few hours after we had checked in and then left to go to the beach and they made us towel swans with rose petals sprinkled around the bed.
The room was a good size, nice and cold, the bed was firm and confortable, rest room was clean and stocked with towels.
The bathroom itself was clean and can you believe it, there was a robe on the bed for us when we arrived.
2 buffet restaurants: La Selva (breakfast and dinner - very good food), La Palapa (lunch - food is horrible).
The food is good but options start to repeat themselves by day 4; very little to choose from for a la carte dining; the pool restaurant and bar vutually shut down by 6:00 pm.
Again with the slightly limited utilities: people, from 12:30-2:00the bar lines got ridicules ((15-20min wait (in peak seasons)), but then afterwards it cleared out (you could get a simple drink from the lunch restaurant to save time).
The hotel was very full and management seemed to be struggling to keep up with service in the buffet restaurants (lineups at lunch, plus not enough cups, cutlery, napkins at breakfast and lunch).
An open air bar, pool table to play, disco upstairs, two restaurants and the landscape is so beautiful and upkept it is like walking into a piece of artwork.
We had no issues with the front desk service.
I also didn't appreciate getting different stories from the front desk staff about the air conditioning.
I waited in line at the front desk for about 5 minutes while others were getting checked in and I know the staff at the front desk saw me.
Beautiful aqua beach, white sand, staff frequently asking for written comments on service so they can improve - best hotel we have ever stayed at.
The spa is on one side of the pool, and the gym/aerobics studio is in the same building as the spa.
We were able to enjoy the pool table located in the lobby, the gym for a quick workout, and take long walks along a mostly deserted beach.
They have a fantastic new spa with reasonable prices and free gym looking onto the pool.
The pool is large and clean, not much room to hide in the shade – but how do you get that sun kissed glow from hiding under an umbrella?
