I would recommend the Basma as a useful place to stay if you can get a good price, but not as a resort hotel or destination in its own right.
We had the hotel buffet one evening and the price was absolutely shocking - over 10 times the amount we'd paid at the restaurants in town.
The people in the hotel's shops are quite greedy, and get very rude when you refuse to pay $20 for some $3 peice of junk (but not as bad as many of the abusive jerks in the market downtown).
The location is good, hotel is well situated on a hill overlooking the Nile and dirty and has the most incompetent staff I have ever experienced.
Next to the excellent Nubian Museum, location: Wonderful and this hotel was fine for a one night stay.
The position high above the Aswan islands is magical, the location of the hotel is good you're looking for peace and quiet, the front desk handles this well.
We booked a taxi to take us to the airport (it is impossible to book a taxi outside the hotel as it is far from the main road).
Arrived early in the morning from the overnight sleeper train from Kairo - took a taxi for 20 egyptian pounds to the hotel (I'm sure its possible to get it cheaper, its just a short ride).
The room was spacious -seriously, me and my girlfriend have never slept in a bigger bed (I asked at arrival for a king sized bed and got it!
We were booked into this hotel as part of a tour, I am quite easygoing with hotels, I require only a clean bed and bathroom and i am pretty much happy.
The room itself wasn't huge, but was comfy with controllable air conditioning, good bathroom, and fridge.
Old bathroom, old furniture and simple beds with only one sheet over the matrass.
Pleasant and welcoming staff, really great bed, big terraces.
The buffet breakfast was really good, we also had lunch here on one day and the portions were huge - could probably have got away with ordering two meals for four people.
Also rooms were nice and the restaurant provided an adequate buffet meal for dinner.
Nice outside bar that overlooked the Nile and great food.
Rooms clean, service from the pool bar was 100% - nice big pool and the food they served was good.
Ordered lunch from the Pool Bar, but they forgot one part of the order.
NOrmal check-in time would have been 12:00am - however due to our early arrival the reception staff was kind enough to allocate us our room much earlier at about 9:30am (without any surcharges!
Really service was great with staff trying to accomodated all our (extra) wishes - and this all for a great price USD 75 in high season (xmas period).
The pool area was beatiful and spotless, service at the hotel was fine, the Staff was very nice and helpful.
The view we had over the city was beautiful, the hotel staff was very pleasant and the front desk individuals spoke very good English.
After relaxing in the large pool, the free shuttle bus into Aswan let us spend an hour in the evening perusing the market - quite an experience!
There is no gym or fitness centre, but there is one close by.
Food good, rooms clean and tidy as was the lobby, pool area etc.
Rooms are clean and the buffet dinner is good.
