I would recommed a hotel in Mal Pais if you are willing to travel to Guanacaste, but do yourself a favor and don't waste your money with Playa Tambor.
However, it's location and amenities as compared to other all-inclusives in Costa Rica made it the only choice for me based on my situation.
The beach was huge and the location of our room was great.
The surrounding areas are clean, the location is amidst a wonderful nature setting and the staff is friendly.
Also, the location makes it easy to get around and visit neighbouring villages if you are interested (Montezuma, Tambor, etc) either by bus, taxi or with a tour.
Once we got to the San Jose airport it was relatively quick to check out to and get onto the bus that took us to our next flight to Tambor.
One of the beds in our room smelled like sweaty sneakers, but we just used the other bed.
The rooms have 2 double beds; in some of the rooms the beds were pushed together to make a king size bed.
The rooms were large clean and bright ,the mattresses were great at bed time our room was filled with the sound of ocean waves and we slept comfortably.
The staff was amazing and the mattresses were great at bed time our room was filled.
Then that night when we came to our room there was a walkway of flowers to the bed a beautiful touch.
The snack bar had food available after breakfast and throughout the evening.
The only restaurants that we were able to eat at were the buffet and the snack bar.
Best meal of the day was hands down breakfast (omelettes made your way and the line-up was never long, crispy bacon, fresh fruit), lunch we usually skipped (ate nachos and burgers.
There was a nice salad bar in the buffet restaurant.
Pool: This is the main entertainment area for the resort with exercise class every day, pool bar and restaurant at each end.
The a la carte restaurants - steak house - was the best - The service and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
The hotel was OK - clean and the service staff were great and accommodating.
Big Jacuzzi style area, 2 shallow pool areas for kids and sports area.
The pool area was clean with lots of activities to do on the resort.
Many people stayed at the pool area but the water at the beach was fantastic.
One thing I don't like is the $20 fee per day for wireless internet.
You can get free wireless at motel 6 so why can't Barcelo do the same?
Our stay there was excellent, the whole staff was great and the rooms were large clean and bright.
Great staff will keep you entertained all day, rooms are clean and the drinks are damn strong.
Its a good place from to go on nature hikes, the staff is very nice and the rooms are clean.
The room was clean and again the food was marvelous.
We typically stay at very nice hotels, pleasant staff and the room was like any other clean.
