Athenaeum Hotel Waterford

Although the hotel is in a quiet location and very close to waterfords centre, the hotel being a large house was noisy as we could constantly hear peoples doors opening and banging shut.

Quiet location and laughed as did not mention the new roads that had been opened.

Great location for touring the county and visiting Waterford Crystal.

Taxi to city centre costs less than a fiver.

But the taxi's are cheap and they know where the hotel is - but like me can't pronounce it.

We stayed here 16th & 17th Feb for Valentines, We checked in, went to our room which was nice, good size bed, bathroom etc.

However, the room was decorated to a high standard, the bed was huge and we had a small flatscreen tv that was mounted on the wall opposite the bed - nice touch!

On returning to the room, the bed had been turned down with rose petals; and the romantic gift was on the bedside table.

The bed was kingsize and we had a hi fi and flatscreen tv.

We were told that our room had been upgraded to a suite, and that the champagne and truffles would be brought up to our room in a few minutes.

We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant which was incredible as well.

Breakfast the next day was good, sitting in the sun filled restaurant.

On each visit we have had breakfast on two mornings and dinner on one evening in the restaurant.

Food in the restaurant was also very good and it was full for Sunday lunch with locals, always a good sign.

We ate in Zak's restaurant that night, the food was very tasty and the waiter was helpful and not over bearing.

Considering we had stayed in a semi functional hotel, been on the receiving end of poor customer service and actually never received services we paid for, we were very disappointed that this was the best they had to offer.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, the night manager made sure we had dinner waiting for us upon arrival as we didn't reach the hotel until late in the evening and were absolutely famished.

Excellent food, friendly efficient and knowledgeable service from my Bavarian waitress and a very good wine list.

During our stay we heard several other guests complain to the manager and other staff regarding the food, poor housekeeping etc, with no satisfactory response.

Though not within walking distance of the city, it's a two minute drive, and we found parking there easily enough.

Out in the lobby, a well-meaning but ill-suited young man systematically and loudly murdered a grand piano as he plonked his way through Satie's delicate back catelogue.

The terrace gives on to a lawn which seems to prter out into nothing before you get to the river.

Room was very nice and clean, we had a delicious dinner.
