This grand old hotel dates back to 1846 and was the first hotel built in Shanghai. It was frequented by such names as Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin. If you want a room that famous people stayed in, they cost Y1580. There are high ceilings, snaking corridors, and wooden floorboards throughout, giving it a somewhat cold and strict feel. The rooms are gigantic, internet can be accessed in the business center, and the male staff wears spats, kilts, and black tailcoats.

Our large room had a view of two rivers and hotel staff were not that friendly nor helpful. Service was wonderful and the bathroom was also very big. Breakfast was very good.
