  Our room was huge, with air conditioning, a fan, a large balcony, and a bathroom with a hot shower. We went at a quiet time, and as the only two English guests we had our own guide, Sytz, who was really friendly, helpful, genuinely knowledgeable about the area and its inhabitants (human and wildlife) and who went out of his way to ensure we had a great time. Just walking around the hotel or having a drink in the bar was amazing, as there were squirrel monkeys, capuchins, macaws, green parrots, owls, bats, vultures, geese, and numerous other creatures who lived in the rainforest and visited the hotel. The squirrel monkeys were particularly friendly in the hope of a nut or a bit of fruit, and weren't averse to climbing on our heads.

  I was quite reluctant to book a trip into the jungle since I am terrified of spiders, bad with heat, hygiene-obsessed, easily sunburnt, and just not out-doorsy or sporty at all.

  The whole process of registering went fairly quickly and we were told what room we were in (Tower 6). One of the employees shouldered some of our suitcases and we were off to the room. I guess you can expect in a hotel of wood over water.

  Necklaces of wooden beads were put around each guest's neck and we were ushered into reception. Somehow in that tiny room they had crowded a loveseat, a double bed, a twin bed, and a 24" square desk and 2 chairs. We were told to show up at the lobby before 8:00 p.

  Clean and convenient toilet facilities along the walk-ways. The food was simple, but good, with fresh bread, fresh fruit, and buffet style for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  The room in which we stayed was rustic, simple, with very dim lighting (making reading at night almost impossible), with a weak (cold water) shower, and a very small bathroom. The rooms in the towers have no insulation: it was a rather "hostel" type of experience and we found that we got very little sleep during our stay. Although we reported it to a staff member, the railing remained unfixed for the time we were there, and we ourselves cautioned other guests about it. The internet was 'out of service' for the 5 days we were there, and there was no laundry service. It is also possible to rent ATVs and bicycles to traverse the walkways.

  We upgraded to a suite on the top floor with a 360 view of the area. The people at the resort were so friendly and accomodating.

  No TV's or phones in the room and the air conditioning (said to be "central air" in my unit) left much to be desired. I found that if I kept the door to the bathroom closed, it helped to keep the temperature in the room down.

  Smallish room with a tacky sofa bed and a double bed. Why, water levels were at a record low and many tours from the Tropical were cancelled. Alas the village pure bred Crufts winning mongrel gave the game away as he sat in the water a few yards away scratching itself, clearly unconcerned by the hoardes of vicous red piranha swimming about. I must spend more time watching TV, it's more exciting than the real deal. Cayman watching/catching - a 20 inch monster, a water monitor is by comparison a mega monster more menacing but equally harmless. So what can you see - not a lot, two semi tame Macaws sponsored by Towers, a number of small monkeys - greatly encouraged to visit by laid out food, one nutty spider monkey - a non paying guest at the Towers, the odd frog, some circling vultures and if you a luckly a fleeting glimpse of fresh water dolphins. What is impressive is the sheer size of the Rio Negro and when it meets up with the Solomin (not sure of the spelling) to form the Amazon river. Nearly forgot, hardly a mozzie about, that is apparently due to the acidity of the water of the Negro river. Maybe if you don't bath for a few days and smear yourself with Iguana blood, you might interest a mozzie.

  Ariaú is in the middle of the jungle, and the only way for us common-garden tourists to get around is with them, by boat. The accommodations are pretty rustic, but adequate. The rooms do have air conditioning, which worked just enough to make it possible to sleep.

  There was no hot water (although the suites apparently have it), but you don't really miss it because the weather is so very hot. The three "swimming pools" are TINY, more like hot tub-size, but if they were any bigger, the wooden stilts would not be able to support the weight of the water.

  I certainly wasnt expecting hot showers and big comfy rooms with all kinds of amenities, (I mean. I was surprised at the cleanliness of the room.

  The jungle guides were friendly and the trips were fine - except there was nothing to see - all we saw were a couple of caimans and some pink dolphins.

  2004 - the room I had was in tower 6 - the building had an awful stench and cold showers are standard. I wanted to upgrade my room to a suite but was told that the amount would double - so I asked to see the "Tarzan lodges" - the jacuzzi was cracked and everything seemed seedy and poorly maintained. Mine was not an isolated incident - in the boat that I was there was a family from California who had booked suites but were relegated to single rooms like mine without any compensation (the front desk staff were rude); a couple from Israel who got locked in their room by the bell-boy and had to break down the door to get out (no phones in the rooms either - they wanted to leave as well; and a South African couple who like me complained about the stench in the building but to no avail. I had to wait 30 minutes to check-in because of the problems with the family from CA, when the keys were ready and waiting - the front desk staff was curt and rude, the entire facilility is poorly maintained and shows its' age. Cold showers, bad food, smelt rancid - avoid.

  The hotel has a price range for every budget, and you get a basic room or a delightful treehouse surprise. Remember you are in the amazon and luxury does not exist here like in africa's posh bush lodges, however the guides and the trips into the amazon offer a wonderful window into another world. The local staff from the area make the hotel a speacial place that will be forever in your memory.
