Great hotel, but interesting (?) room decor

This is a very good hotel, located almost on the main walking street in Frankfurt. The hotel is modern and there are good restaurants and a very nice lobby bar on site. The rooms are large and comfortable, but have a "weird" almost S&M decor...i.e. think black leather and lots of metal. Strange...must be a throw back to another period or popular style, possibly the 1980s??? Still, the best thing about this hotel is the great breakfast! And the staff is very kind and helpful.

Terrible - Not up to Luxury Collection standards!

If this were a run-of-the-mill Sheraton, I would have said that this was a mediocre hotel. As a supposed member of Starwood's Luxury Collection, and at the rates they charge (about EUR280 a night), I'd have to say that this hotel has serious shortcomings.
Pluses
(1) Decent service - e.g. handled my laundry and pressing needs efficiently
(2) Room size is quite large by European standards
Minuses
(1) Really outdated and tacky furnishing. The decor looks like it hasn't been refreshed since the 1980s and looks really tacky. It's definitely not what you would expect from a Luxury Collection 5-star hotel. E.g., I've stayed at the Sheraton Imperial in Kuala Lumpur, another Luxury Collection hotel, which had much more pleasant rooms.
(2) Although I requested a non-smoking room, the first room I was allocated smelled of cigarette smoke. Although I was then assigned a non-smoking room, I wasted about 20 minutes waiting around while they sorted it out.
(3) There was no hot water when I tried to shower in the afternoon checking-out. As it was a hot day, I managed. I subsequently learnt at check-out that this was because of a breakdown of the pump that morning, and the hotel had been without hot water for several hours. These things happen, but I would have appreciated perhaps a note slipped under the door? The bedside table lamp was also not functioning the night before. These incidents don't create a good impression of how the property is maintained.

I have been to this hotel a number of times for business (when all the other hotels are full). I have had similar experiences to others, being booked in a non-smoking room but with a really bad smell of stale smoke in the room.
The rooms are decorated in an early 1980's Austin Powers style. The hotel is in huge need of an update and total refurbishment, and only survives because of its brand, otherwise no-one would stay at the rates they charge.

Used some points to stay here two nights. Got a selection of some free wine or apple wine. Picked the wine wasn't a bad bottle.
This is a great location off the Zile if you want to go shopping and some good food as well. The Indian palace just block north was fantastic.
Room was on the 6th floor near the pool on the inside of the hotel. Very quiet, nice room darkening shades.
Luggage took awhile to arrive to the room. I think this was the bellhop because he also was very slow on getting us out of the hotel as well (two other hotel staff who were walking by helped us out!) The other night I brought a bunch of stuff in another bellhop was right behind me (and got a tip for his quick work).
We ordered a baby crib. The baby crib was a little dirty and old. We had to put some elbow grease into cleaning it. I mentioned this to the front desk and they were ready to send someone to fix it but somethings you do better yourself.
The bed was a typical german firm bed. Didn't give me any aches.
They had a little sign for "world of pillows" so we ordered some different pillows for our Room. I liked this as I'm not a big fan of feather pillows.
Indoor pool was small and very cold (very german!) However they have some decent saunas (wet and dry).
The heated floor in the bathroom was nice! Overall a typical 4-5 star hotel room that was clean. Sheets turned down at night with some chocolate added to the pillow.
Room service brought plates/silverware up when we are ate in, as well as hot water for the baby stuff without charging for it. (I just tipped)
800 calls (for calling card) was 3 euros per call (this was stated in the telephone guide but might be important for other people to know)

Rooms are fine but nothing remarkable, while the lobby/breakfast area is actually pretty cool (contemporary design). Good breakfast. Located in the middle of a rather non-descript commercial area. Must be some interesting shops and restaurants somewhere nearby, but I didn't run across any in my short walk.
I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to stay here. On the other hand, if you need to stay in this part of the city, I think you'll find this place just fine.
