Fabulous boutique hotel in a good location without being in the city centre, just near Hagley Park. Staff service was excellent with particular mention for the concierge who did an outstanding job in the location and return of prescription glasses which had been left in Greymouth. Rooms were of a high standard and very comfortable.

Apparently the George is the best hotel in Christchurch. The food was pleasant and the staff nice. The rooms are not remotely 5stars, and that is no biggie for me, but I think would be for people who were expecting it.
It's not that the rooms are nasty, they are just that they are a bit flair-free and not huge. That being said my family and I had a pleasant one day stay here.

The check-in staff member answered a telephone call from someone else while he was checking us in and completed our check-in without looking at us or speaking to us. He also had a screen sunk down into his desk which meant this was done with our view being of the top of his head.
15 minutes after getting to our room, we were told we had been checked in to the wrong room by mistake and they would now be coming to get some furniture off our balcony to put into the adjacent room for a Member of Parliament who would be staying there. At the time, we found this exceedingly rude and offensive. However, we now put it down to a simple cultural difference between New Zealand and the UK. As Brits, we did not mind the mistake at all and would have had no problem at all in resolving the problem in the case of, for example, a prominent religious, academic, scientific or Royal guest, but there is NO WAY we would be asked to show such respect to an MP and a British MP would be horrified to think they were receiving better treatment since there would be a risk of it getting into the newspapers.
The meals in both restaurants were excellent and otherwise we went without a hitch.

We stayed for 2 nights in a Executive Room (room 302) which was very quiet, comfortable, of reasonable size and had a nice bathroom. Our room also had a small balcony which overlooked other buildings and a car park. The reception area is nicely designed with a single desk for the receptionist and chairs for arriving guests to relax whilst checking-in. Just off reception is a bar and lounge which is very welcoming when arriving or returning to the hotel after a day out. Staff were generally friendly and efficient.
The George is also very well located for the main attractions in Christchurch and has ample free parking so you can just leave the car and walk everywhere. Furnishing and the decor were excellent throughout.

Panic! Just as we were going off to the airport, we looked at our plane tickets and saw that the time on my ticket was wrong. Our flight was due to leave in 20 minutes, not in an hour and 20 minutes. Desk clerk at the George called the airport and got them to agree to hold our plane! If that isn't service, I don't know what is. Porter rushed out and called our cab and told him to come asap. Cabbie arrived and as he rushed us to the airport said "Mike at the front desk is fantastic. He specializes in lost luggage."
I know New Zealand is an amazing place and the people are superbly friendly in the South Island but we were so impressed by the desk staff at The George. We also loved our big comfy room with the views of the park. Only stayed one night so can't comment on the food or facilities. Breakfast was fine but nothing special. Used the two computers in the lobby. Walked around town. The George is about 10 minutes from the center but it's a perfectly pleasant walk.
(My ticket had been issued in Tokyo a year earlier and I guess the flgiht time had changed. My husband's itinerary was a more recent one so I suppose his had been updated while mine was still out of date)
