Stayed here for a day during a long-weekend trip.
Chose this place for some rest after a party in Nottingham, could not have been happier with the choice. Great setting opposite the racecourse, with a lake behind the Hall. If you do stay here, you must take a leisurely stroll through the grounds. Fantastic on a Summer evening.
Picked a superior room, was given one facing the racecourse and fountain at the front of the property. Room was massive...but the bathroom was probably the biggest I have seen in 20 years of travelling. Separate shower, bath in the middle of the room.
Room decked out in period-style furniture. Fridge and tea/coffe making facilities. Large LCD TV. Bed very comfortable, all generally clean.
Good quality amenities in the bathroom. Bought a bottle of champagne in with me, borrowed an ice-bucket from the restaurant, sat in the bathtub and had one of those "how I'd like to live" moments.
Took advantage of the offer in the restaurant. Food was above average, nothing spectacular.
There are a couple of things that I didn't find too great:
1) There was no air-conditioning. OK, so for a period house this size it may not be feasible, but all we had in the room was a desk-top fan. At least two floor-standing fans should have been there
2) The bar was closed because of a wedding. Although the wedding party invited us to join them, and to use their bar, I felt as if the hotel guests were neglected because of this.
However, in spite of the two points above, it would be unfair of me to award anything less than a 5...especially after my previous nights stay in the Crowne Plaza, another 4-star rated property. The differences between the two could have been greater.

We stayed at this hotel in order to watch the cricket at Trent Bridge. It is the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. Our superior room was not very clean, grubby mattress cover, rock hard foam pillows and a bed as hard as concrete. The evening meal was terrible and we had to send it back. There were two weddings being held which we hadn't been warned about and the noise of drunken guests swearing and throwing glasses outside our window went on until 4.am in the morning. We checked out at 6.30am having had no sleep. We complained at the time and in writing to the General Manager and the owner and three months later we are still trying to receive some form of discount and a proper apology. We are very well travelled and not in the habit of complaining but this experience was awful therefore I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We went to Notingham, primarily to catch Andy Williams in concert as we could not get decent seats in London. As it was also our wedding anniversary we thought we would spend a couple of days in Nottingham but definately did not want to stay in the towm centre. I am in the travel business so after some research in finding a nicer setting, I chose Colwick Hall.
I wanted a superior room, and after an accurate description over the phone with the very helpful receptionist I chose room103 overlooking the lake.
We arrived from London after a rather arduos journey, we were given our room key from the very warm and friendly girl on reception, unfortunately there were no one to help with our luggage.
We went to our concert that night and had a wonderful time, but on our return to the hotel we had to endure the most base boosting boom boom boom from a party held in the thin walled marquee down below on the lawn...on and on it went until I just had to say something and rang reception. They were apologetic but informed me that it would not finish until 1am, in fact in about an hours time to be exact...They did say they would try to get them to turn down the base. We did not sleep much that night.
Next day we were approached by a receptionist and apologised for the noise we had experienced the night before. She informed us that there was going to be another party that night and asked if we would care to transfer to another room, a quieter room...this, I felt was a nice gesture, we viewded the room and accepted room 103, Byrons room.
We went out for most of the rest of day, but got back later, showered and dressed for dinner in the Georgetown Restaurant. The food was fairly good. There was a good pianist in the restaurant ,so we hung around bit longer than we would have and finally left the restaurant to go to bed around 11pm.
At around this time, some of the guests from both of the functions (there were 2 functions going on, one in the ball room and one in the marquee) were coming and going, honking horns and making loads of noise...now don't forget, we had been moved to the front of the hotel so it would be quieter for us!!!..It certainly was not...
We did eventually drift off to sleep but only to be woken by what can only be described as a drunken mob just below our window...we closed the window but it made no difference...more honking car horns, very loud hollering men and the screaming wails of banshee sounding women...oh my, they were soo loud...and so we had another night disturbed...my husband rang this time...the person who answered said they were trying to get rid of them..it was now 2am.
There is something very wrong with this, how can this hotel pertain to be a romantic peaceful setting when they run these party functions? I can understand from a business perspective they want and need the business, but they just do not have a suitable property to hold these functions. I am left now with the impression they will always please those who will be spending the most money and carry on just pacifying those who complain, and one member of staff did tell us this was a common complaint.
Its such a shame that the staff have deal with these problems and these complaints as they really do appear to work hard and they really seem warm, approachable and friendly, they probably find it hard to please everyone, but it is the owners, the proprietors that need to get to this right.
The house itself is very beautiful, and although I personally hate the modern bits in a beautiful period home...but this is just a personal taste thing. The rooms are generally clean, a bit of dust here and there, but the beds are comfortable and the rooms are very nice for a four star hotel...The bathrooms are nice and big just like everyone has already said.
My husband and I are not moaners, we love to have fun and can certainly understand people having a good time at parties, but this was exessive and IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A ROMANTIC AND PEACEFUL SETTING...that was why we chose it...but we feel we never got what we thought we were getting.
I hope I have not put anyone off of this hotel...on the contrary, this is a lovely place, a lovely old palladian house, rich in history and I would most definately recommend it to my clients...but I would make sure that you know they it might not be as peaceful and romantic as they might have hoped for.
