Overall, a great value for such an old, historic, and yes, "charming" hotel. I was fortunate to be in one of the rooms at the end of a hallway, which is slightly larger than the others.
Wish more of the staff spoke English. Wish there were more signs in English, especially in the spa downstairs. Wish there were latches on the inside of room doors, as in American hotels. However, the staff was very friendly, helpful and efficient. There were protests going on in front of the hotel when I was there, and the staff immediately beefed up security and shut down the hotel to everyone but guests.
Bring your own laptop if you're a power-internet user, as there's always a wait for the computer provided to guests.
One tip: ask that the A/C be activated upon check-in, and you may have to repeat the request every day of your stay (they'll do so immediately).
Eat at the restaurant next door, "La Clac" which was once featured by Rachel Ray on Food Network.
One big plus was that the hotel would exchange American currency for Argentinian Pesos at a better rate than the banks!

4* hotel with reasonable facilities; decor from the 1920s but gives it charm. Buffet breakfast; worst scrambled egg we have ever had. Fresh towels twice a day, and most staff speak reasonable English. Security box on request. Good central location within walking distance to Playa de Mayo (main square). We opted for a room at the back of the hotel (we were offered the choice of front or back) therefore no traffic noise (hotel faces a main road) but no natural light either.

don't expect much of a view. We had a room facing one of the "light shafts" so even though we were on the 7th floor we had to lean out the window to see the sky. I suppose room on top floors are a different story. And facing the street is probably nice. Anyways the room was very clean as was the bed, which was comfy. Bathroom very big and newly renovated. Funny thing is that the room had clearly had new fittings and everything, but the furniture was an odd mix of old stuff that should had been chucked out as they weren't old enough to be charming and not new enough to be modern. I'm usuallly quite fuzzy, but I think the rooms and the hotel is fine - and most of all clean. The location is great for sightseeing, but not fab for night life and restaurants as we preferred both Palermo and San Telmo over Centro.

Pros: all cab drivers (except one!) knew the location, metro was right outside, nice lobby, friendly staff, not expensive, close (no more than 15 minutes on foot, cab, or train) to several attractions, including Plaza de Mayo, Casa Rosada, Cafe Tortoni, Confiteria La Ideal, the Obelisk, bank across the street, a few cafes and restaurants nearby, easy to get cabs outside hotel or on streets close-by, mini-fridge/minibar in room, room service (never used it, but nice to know it was available), free Internet station between lobby and elevators. Had rooms near back of hotel, so it was usually pretty quiet at bed time.
Hotel also has spa, but if you intend to use it, book in advance. Only ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant, but it was more than adequate to get started in the morning. It was a buffet with coffee, tea, freshly squeezed orange juice (they also had grapefruit juice), medialunas, scrambled eggs, toast, assorted jams and jellies, cereal, fresh fruit, and a couple of small desserts.
Cons: not so crazy about the neighborhood itself, although all the basics were close, and then some, but we had to take cabs or trains to get to nicer/livelier parts of the city (San Telmo, Recoleta, Puerto Madero, Palermo, etc.). Rooms are small and plain, but this is not necessarily a con, since we were hardly ever there. (Pretty much the same as a room in an old, small hotel in a European city.) The beds were hard, though. Think Best Western rooms, but with semi-fancy lobby.
If on a budget, definitely consider this--it has all the basics, plus a few amenities, it's convenient to banks and transportation, and it's close to a few attractions. If you're willing to spend a little more for nicer accommodations or a better location, do not like basic accommodations, or want to be closer to lively night spots, you may want to look at a different hotel in another part of town.

Very depressing, old, moldy, tacky hotel. There rooms quiet honestly were disgusting with dirt on the walls and old curtains and bed spread. The tv was something out of the 1970's. The staff was very unhelpful- would not go out of there way at all to help you get somewhere or find something. Check out was 10 am on the dot- never heard of that especially in South America. The worst hotel I've stayed in in a long while. DON"T STAY HERE
