Mixed experience at NH

Some good and some bad at a recent stay at the NH. On the plus side the hotel was nice and modern. The rooms were a decent size and the airconditioning worked very well in the hot Budapest weather. The hotel is in a quiet location a little bit away from the main sights, but very well serviced by tram and metro (subway). Another great thing was free wired internet in every room.
A few things irked us about the stay. There was no assistance with baggage offered when we arrived - in fact there were no staff to be seen except behind the check-in desk. Also be wary when asking the hotel staff (at the front desk) for help or recommendations. We asked on the first night for a restaurant recommendation and were directed to a nearby restaurant that was pretty good, but a little expensive. Then on the second night I went to the front desk with the name and address of a restaurant that I had researched online and the front-desk lady said that she thought it was a mediocre restaurant and we should instead go to a restaurant of her recommendation. This seemed a little fishy, and we ended up going to our original pick which turned out to be very good - and cheaper than the restaurant that was recommended the first night.
Also be careful when asking them to book a taxi for the trip back to the airport. The taxi service they booked was quoted at HUF6500 to the airport, and we had to tell them specifically to book the official airport taxi which only cost HUF4900 for a station wagon taxi.
Overall the staff were mixed, with some being grumpy and giving the impression that they had a conflict of interest. Stay there, but have a clear idea of what you want and it should be fine.

An excellent situated hotel, 5 mins walk from the Metro & train station. Just off a main street with easy access to Danube and tourist sights.
Staff are very friendly and helpful except the evening barman, who let the side down at times.
Breakfast are very good, large selection, excellent quality and served in pleasent surroundings.
Room was large and well furnished, beds were especially comfortable. Bathroom was fine, except when you turn off the shower and the shower head leaps out of the shower head. Nice range of toiletries too.
Highly recommend the purchase of budapest tourist card, exceptional value if you utilise the many savings it offers.

Stayed at the NH last November for a long weekend with my partner.
We got a really good rate which included breakfast, and was definitely worth it.
We were given a room at the front of the hotel (which I requested when I booked) which was of a good size, and had a balcony. It was nice to be able to look out over the street, but there's not much of a view to be honest, and the weather was terrible anyway.
No problems with the room at all, very good standard, clean and comfortable.
The breakfast was nice, plenty of choice and all good. I'd definitely recommend you try and get a rate which includes it.
We used the hotel sauna once. A good experience, especially after a long day out in the snow!
The NH is in a good location for central Budapest, not too far to walk anywhere. We only used public transport once.
Budapest was lovely, we had a good weekend, and I'd definitely recommend it.
Make sure you try goulash soup (it was good at several different places) and go to Robinsons restaurant in the city park. We loved it! Oh and the Belgian Beer Cafe near the NH was good also.

Not so thrill

My husband and I stayed at the NH Budapest for 4 nights right before Thanksgiving in 2007.
The room was booked as non-smoking. After checking in, we found out our room was actually a smoking room; they switched us to a non-smoking room without problem. However, this non-smoking room (on the 4th floor ) faced the inside enclosure. The lobby had an enclosed dome on the top (about 7 or 8 floor high) with some of the rooms facing inside and surrounding the center dome.
This room was extremely hot and the air conditioning was not working. We opened the window, but because of the enclosed dome; there was not much fresh air. Instead, we heard loud noises through out the night - from the front desk, the bars, the cleaning and the early morning breakfast preparing, etc. It was a long sleepless night.
The next morning, we requested to be switched again to a room facing the outside. They obliged and we were satisfied with this room.
After returning home on 11/23/07; I found out that I had left behind a pair of wool pants. My husband e-mailed the hotel right away. On 11/26/07, the front desk replied his e-mail and confirmed that the housekeeper had found the pants. On 11/28/07 we agreed on the 25 USD charge to send the pants back.
At that time, the front desk said that they had to wait for the manager to come back before they could process the shipping. The manager was on holiday. During the next few weeks, my husband had sent 3 or 4 e-mails asking for updates regarding the matter. Finally, on 12/20/07; we received an e-mail from the manager who apologetically informing us that they had lost the pair of pants.
Also worth reporting was the breakfast service - very slow. One morning they even ran out of food after tending a large Japanese group.
Overall, I can't say that I had a great experience with this hotel.
