I stayed at the Morrison-Clark in May with my mom. I personally abhor large hotels and prefer charm and history. Both are evident at this hotel. The staff is genuinely courteous and helpful. I can forgo some modern conveniences(no coffee maker in rooms, business center computer is a dinosaur) for a little refreshing charm. The location is excellent. One traveler felt this area was unsafe, but we didn't feel this at all. We often walked back to the hotel in the evening and never felt unsafe. We loved our stay here and I definitely plan to stay here again when I come back to DC.

If you read the previous reviews, you find some which are glowing and some which are very negative. To me, this reflects the nature of a historically-preserved old hotel. The property is not large, and the rooms are laid out in a fashion that was probably very suitable in a by-gone era. If you want a new, modern hotel, with all the new, modern amenities, then this is probably not the place for you. But if you like to stay in older properties with some charm and character, creaky floorboards, rattling doorknobs and all, then you may just love this place. I found it to be clean and the staff to be courteous and helpful. The building iteself is just what it is. It is old. But in my view, it is very well-maintained. It is not unlike many of the older hotels that you will find in Europe, which try very hard to keep up with modern standards, while maintaining a sense of the past. Some folks like that, and some don't.

I got a very reasonable rate directly from the hotel's website and a simple upgrade request at the front-desk at check in scored us a room with a fun view and little balcony. The hotel is elegantly appointed and has true historic charm. There is a nightly manager's reception with wine and a lovely dining room with full lengths mirrors and a cozy fireplace by which you can enjoy what appeared to be an outstanding menu. (We didn't eat at the hotel, but wouldn't hesitate to do so on a future visit.) All hotel staff were extremely friendly, gracious, and helpful. Our room was small, but nicely appointed with antiques and tapestries. The bed had a nice down comforter, but was, unfortunately, a bit hard for our tastes. The vanity sink "gurgled" at us once in a while, but that added to the older charm of the hotel. Formerly two private residences eventually combined to provide affordable rooms for soldiers, the hotel has a rich history that's worth reading. There's a tiny business center and workout space downstairs. The front steps are a bit steep, so watch your footing, but definately give this place a try next time your're in DC.

I'm a native Washingtonian but have never heard of or seen this hotel before. It was a nice change from other hotels I've stayed in with a quiet court yard, fire place in the lobby area and over all quiet area. It seems like it can be a Bed-n-Breakfast but its not.

I recently stayed at this hotel compliments of a friend and I am glad it was free. They claim that they were built in the 1820s and are trying to maintain their historic character. I wish they would maintain the prices at a historic rate because the amenities are minimal. The room was small and had no aesthetic beauty, in other words, it had a drab feel to it.
There was no microwave, refridgerator or a coffee maker and when we asked the front desk personnel (very friendly and hospitable) they said they were attempting to preserve their historic reputation.
I would not stay there again if I had to pay because it did not provide a homely feeling. Not to mention that we had to pay for botlled water at a $5.00 charge per 1 liter bottle. No complimentary bottles were provided.
One good thing was the staff; they were EXTREMELY friendly, professional and accommodating. They made my stay tolerable.
