This hotel could have been much better, but it also could have been worse. Let me explain.
I booked the room in a package deal. I knew there would be another person in the room, but because I was only purchasing my flight (not both flights) I could only list one person. There ended up being three of us in the room, so they charged us an extra 30 euros per night. We were also told they would upgrade us to a bigger room on the second night of our stay (I assume they were full the first night). This would not have been so big of a problem were it not for the following.
The first room was tiny, but I've come to expect that in Europe. We were greeted by a hot room with no air conditioning as advertised. The window was open to the street (on the side of Piazza Venezia) which would've been great except for the unending noise. This is a very busy square. There is traffic and voices (yelling in some cases) ALL night. When you're in a room with no A/C, you have to leave the window open to breathe, so heat + noise = VERY little (if any) sleep. Furthermore, if you are anything above a small sized person, the bathroom is unmanageable. I am tall and thin, yet the toilet was a tight fit. The bade faucet is right beside your right leg and can easily be accidentally turned on giving you a little surprise. The shower is at your left leg. The toilet paper is above your head. Just NOT a good set up. The tub of the shower was beat up making it look dirty. The white tile on the floor also looked very dirty, though I think it was permanent marks. Why on earth we had to pay EXTRA for a room of this caliber, I do not understand.
On day two we were moved to a much nicer room and were greeted by a welcome wall of cold air as we entered. There were three beds with space between (not much though) and the bathroom was much spacier. The toilet and bade were separate and the shower was bigger with a nice shower head. However, there was no hot water. We called the desk to find out why. They said there was someone coming the next morning around 8am, which of course was too late as we had to leave earlier than that. I hadn't had such a breath-takingly cold shower since my teenage days of going to camp. It was not good at all.
Overall, the service was fairly pleasant. We were provided maps and the attendant pointed out sites of interest for us. However, I can't say that I would recommend this hotel again, especially after reading other similar reviews. Obviously our issues were not one-time occurrences.

Having cast the requisite coins into the Trevi fountain, I hope that one day I shall return to Rome. It is a lovely and historic city. However, one place to which I shall definitely NOT be returning is the Hotel Piazza Venezia. On arrival the reception area was pleasant and the staff helpful and courteous. This therefore did nothing to prepare our party for what was to greet us on the fourth floor. As we stepped from the elevator we were hit by a wall of hot air; if we had wondered where all the heat had gone from the ground floor now we knew. The rooms were no better, and there is nothing that one can do about it, other than complain, since the air conditioning is controlled centrally. An exception is room 420 where it is controlled by what looks like a mobile phone stuck to the wall behind the lift shaft. Unfortunately we were not told about this on arrival and I spent the first night being kept awake by the heat and by what proved to be an air conditioning fan that sounded as if it were about to tear itself apart at any moment. Only by the third evening had the temperature in our rooms come down to a level at which it was worth getting into bed rather than lying on top of it. The corridor outside remained like an oven. Our rooms were dark. In most the only outside light came from a small fanlight in the sloping roof. Yes, this was a loft or attic extension. In my room the bedside lights did not work and a coil of wire protruding from the bathroom wall did not improve my confidence in the electrics. My room had no wardrobe but I was lucky and had a clothes rail below which there was a drawer. A collegue had no such luxury and lived out of a suitcase for the duration of our stay. On the first morning we found that there was no water with which to have a wash or to flush the WC. Whilst this was not the hotel's fault but due to on-going works along the road, there was no warning, and it does seem that there is a risk of a recurrence until the works are completed. Thanks to Trenitalia I still had a refreshing towel. I never thought that I would be so grateful for one. Much is made of the hotel's central position. However this is something of a red herring. Rome is such an easy city to get around. A series of well planned strolls will take in most of the sights and four euros will buy you unlimited travel for the day on the busses, even if they are rather crowded. Also, the Piazza Venezia never sleeps, so if you can open a window neither will you. The hotel offers no food. Breakfast can be provided at one of the cafes next door. However, thanks to the central position a coffee and glass of orange juice can cost you eight euros if you want to sit down. The final straw came when one of our party was charged an extra fifty euros on departure. The hotel maintained that his booking had been made separately and at a different rate. We had the confirmation of booking in writing to prove otherwise, but the hotel would have none of it and when you have a flight to catch you do not have time to argue. We were charged between 139 and 169 euros per night which was exorbitant for the standard of accomodation provided. I cannot imagine how this hotel was ever awarded three stars. Some of the staff perhaps deserve some credit for effort. However there are Youth Hostels in the UK that offer better accomodation and unless you have strong masochistic tendancies or an odd sense of humour this hotel is one to avoid.

My stay at the hotel piazza venezia in Rome from June 30th till July 3rd was pleasant except for one major detail. The description of the room said air conditioned, and it was not. Although the staff was very friendly, they did nothing to remedy the situation. My first night the room was far from cool but there was air coming out of the vent. The second night I complained to the night manager, I even asked for a fan. He explained they had no fans and I could NOT change rooms because they were fully booked. The third night the room was sweltering! I went down to the desk and complained, I wrote a complaint in their hotel log, but they did not fix it, and did not have another room. The night manager even came up up to the room and said it was "really hot". He opened the skylight window but all that did was allow me to hear the loud street below. I then came down at 2:30 am to the lobby to complain again and all they said was "sorry". I hung out in the lobby for atleast an hour before retirning to my sauna of a room, i did not sleep at all. When I checked out on July 3rd I exprssed that I paid for an air conditioned room and did not have one. The manager, laura sabatini, explained that she could not give a refund because I have paid in full thru the Internet. Although the staff was friendly they did nothing to remedy the problem, never once did they check to see if the air was working or check the vent in my room. I literary could have stayed on the same block for half the price if I didnt want air conditioning.

We have just returned from a fantastic trip to Rome however Hotel Piazza Venezia was ok but could have been a lot more pleasant.
Firstly, it is a long walk from Termini - I suggest you get the 40 or 64 bus from outside the station (we didn't realise this until we familarised ourselves with the area) and like other reviewers, we found the hotel completely by chance, it is not easy to find.
We arrived at 12 but were told a room wouldn't be available until 2pm which is normal practice in many hotels I have stayed in. The receptionist gave us a map and highlighted all the main sites which was invaluable during our stay. When we returned after having lunch (avoid the restaurants outside the hotel, they are expensive and the food is poor) we were assigned room 402. After reading a previous negative review of this room, we asked the receptionist to assign us another room which he kindly did with little fuss.
The room we stayed in wasn't huge and had high ceilings. After a few minutes we discovered the room didn't have air conditioning despite being advertised as having it. Rome is very hot and it did make it a little uncomfortable. Also, we were facing the main road and the noise was terrible we even had to buy ear plugs. The bathroom was tiny with a half sized bath with chipped paint. Also, large people will have difficulty sitting on the toilet as it is placed between the bath and the wall.
It wasn't all bad, apart from the chipped bath, the cleaniness of the room is good with fresh sheets and a clean floor. The location is fantastic, 10 minutes to Trevi or Coloseum and a short bus ride to the Vatican.

Had a similar experience to a previous poster - originally we were in a small attic space, with just a small skylight. I was not too upset with this since the price was FAR less than most other hotels in the area. However there was NO hot water! I asked the staff about it, and he promptly blew me off stating that it was normal for this happen occasionally. I asked for a new room, but was refused. The next morning, a new attendant switched our room, with plenty of hot water.
With the exception of the hot water, and one rude staff member, this was a good hotel. The location was excellent - only had to use public transportation to get to the vatican, other than that, everything was within walking distance. I would stay here again most likely.
