Have stayed at Intercontinental Hotels in several countries across Europe, Africa and US and they are usually excellent from my experience.
The one in Bangkok is an impressive building with a good location, great breakfast but the check-in could be a bit more professional. It took 30 mins for us to check in for a non-smoking room but when we arrrived in our room it stank of tobacco and you could feel the springs on the bed through the mattress. The reception staff were helpful when we went back down but once again gave us the wrong room type - this time with twin beds instead of a double.
Good idea to double check with the reception staff a few times before you trek up and down 20 floors to your room! A bit of training for the reception staff in how to speed up their service wouldn't go amiss either.

The main thing that stands out at the Intercontinental is the staff - they were excellent. The rooms were very big, clean and a huge supply of bottled water.
The location is very good - directly opposite the main sky train station and very close to some of the bigger shopping centres.
The food and drinks were very good - the dessert selection in the Espresso Bar evening buffet were beautiful and very tasty.

We stayed here twice this month, at the beginning and end of our time in SEA.
The hotel's location is just excellent, the skytrain is just at the hotel door, as is the skywalk that connects the hotel to a moltitude of shopping malls (Erawan, Central World, Siam Paragon). The hotel is also directly connected to Gaysorn Mall.
We stayed in a club room which had just recently been refurbshed and was lovely. The soundproofing is a bit iffy - noise from the corridor is clealry audibel and one night we were woken up by our neighbours having... a good time. The room was large, spotless and comfortable.
The lounge on 37th floor is pleasant and service agreeable. Breakfast and drinks are speedy and staff is pleasant.
The congierge in the main lobby deserve a special mention. They all spoke impeccable english, knew just about any restruant or location we mentioned and offered to book places and provide directions to places. On two occasions our taxi got lost and we called the hotel congierce who spoke to the driver and directed him!!!
The pool on the top floor is smallish but nice enough though we never spent any real time there. The gym looked pretty good.
All in all a top hotel choice and would certainly stay here again.

I spent 3 nights at the Intercontinental Bangkok after a 3 week long backpacking trip through Thailand and Laos.
The hotel didn't bat an eye when I showed up with a filthy backpack and looking disheveled after staying in guesthouses for the earlier 3 weeks. A true test of a hotel is that they treated me like royalty even though I looked nothing like it.
My regular room was large, with a great view of the city and skytrain. The bathroom was to die for with a full size tub and a separate shower with a rain-style shower head.
Location was great, walking distance to the many giant malls and to the wonderful Lingham Shrine (that everyone should go hunt for behind a nearby hotel--trust me on this).
The Bangkok Intercontinental is one of the top hotels I've ever stayed at; stellar service, all amenities available, and a spotless room.
