The Dom Pedro Golf is very well located in Vilamoura insofar that it is a little bit away (5-10 minute walk) from the marina hub, but obviously close enough not to feel isolated from it.
The building itself is a 1970s concrete prefab quite typical of those found in mediterranean (sic) resorts. It is kept clean & tidy but it is beginning to show its age. One of the three lifts were not working while we were there which made life difficult for some at breakfast time and there were repeated complaints to reception about the air-conditioning not working in the rooms.
The rooms themselves were reasonably sized and cleaned every day. The one big issue for me personally however were the beds. They were old and dilapidated and every time either myself or my wife turned in the night, there would be a loud creak from the ageing divan resulting in disturbing the other person up. In hindsight I ought to have complained about this but I thought I would get used to it. I didn't and I must say I didn't get a decent night's sleep the whole week. So if you get a creaky bed - ask to change rooms or else your relaxing break will turn into a tiring one!
The breakfasts were good, varied and catered for most tastes. The hotel staff were pleasant and attentive.
The real jewel in the crown for me is that the outdoor area is huge and offers a great degree of flexibility whatever your age group and whether or not you have a family. There are two pools, both of which are subdivided. The smaller one has a small paddling area for toddlers and a slightly larger one for kids. The larger pool appeared to be split between the area for the adults to cool off and another area for those who wanted a swim. Out of the pool the large grassy area is perfect if you want to soak up the sun or if you want to get some shade in the sanctuary of the numerous palm trees. There is also an informal volleyball court and small goalposts for 5-a-side or water polo. In addition there is a kids club with a wee playpark for families who want to get rid of the kids for the afternoon.
There certainly was a healthy mix between couples (young & old), families & nationalities (although British in the main) and at no point during our week did it feel overrun with golfers. I would certainly recommend the hotel to young families, the ones that were there at the time certainly seemed to enjoy it, as did we.
To sum up, I'd say I would rather give it 3 1/2. To give it 3 seems harsh, but to give it 4 would be pushing it. If they pay a little more attention to upgrading the basics (air-con, lifts, beds), and maybe modernise the internals a bit, then it would feel like a 4 star. That said, I would be happy to stay there again if I were to get a cheap deal...

hotel has spacious rooms with all you need including hairdryer
for a place to rest after a days activities.
hotel has large reception area with plenty of space to relax and read or meet.
Outside pool area has grass covered grounds with plenty of tree cover to escape the sun.
Never had a problem with getting a sunbed but some days were a lot busier than others.
Despite other reviews opinions we found the staff happy, polite and willing to help when needed.
beach is a short walk away and has great facilities and the best toilets on any beach anywhere.
Breakfast was good with a large buffet selection only downside was self service coffee and tea machines.
hotel prices for drink was high but most of the bars in vilamoura were the same.
tip: bottle of house white (drinkable) was only 9 euro in the hotel compared to 3.50 for a small glass.
restaurants in the resort were good but expensive our average was 70 euros a meal for 2.
bars had live entertainment and we recommend the Atlantic piano bar and the captains bar when the Portugeuse Sinatra is on (Thursdays).
we found the resort clean and the locals friendly with good restaurants and bars.
This is a couples place and caters for the more mature groups and feel that younger people would find it a bit quiet for nightlife.
overall a great holiday and would return to this resort and hotel.

the hotel was clean but not 4 star. a good 3 star is fair. room was fine, big balcony overlooked the casino and sea. breakfast was varied and plentyful 10 out of 10. pool area was lovely makes a change to sit around a pool on grass rather than concrete. plenty of shady areas and sunbeds. nice pool bar area for drinks and snacks also. never ate in the restaurant as the marina is close by with so many restaurants to choose from. ten euro deposit and a couple of euros per day to use the safe in the room. beach towels 5 euro deposit. to use the indoor pool etc is 15 euros. didnt try that either - it was a very small pool. one thing we found strange was that for a hotel of its size and the large lounge area there was only one toilet for ladies and one for men. place was full of male golf groups. not that that was a problem but didnt see many families or couples. went to the casino to see the show (cotton club)and have a meal. 27.50 euros three courses wine, water and coffee. well worth it and made a nice change too.
played golf at laguna, millenium, pinhal, vale do lobo and quinta da lago. pinhal was the worst. a bit tatty in places.
